The reading and the professor have a debate on whether setting an international fund can help countries to protect the forests. The writer claims that this way is the most important initiative. However, the professor points out that the suggestion is flawed for some reasons.

First, the author states that the government, land owner and farm can use this money to resist the commercial organization which will destroy the forests for money and make sure that the land for agricultural use will not be interrupted. While the professor views this issue from a different angle, According to him, the agriculture itself is a kind of damage because farmer used some modern technology such as fertilizer and pesticide may do harm to the surrounding environment. It will cause the water pollution and runoff waste, which much worse than logging.

Second, the passage claims that the fund can be used to develop the economies of villagers and tribal residents to continue local people』 daily life and improve the quality of their life. However, the professor casts doubt on this opinion by saying that the money will go to forest owners rather than residents. Therefore, the money would not end up in the hands of those forest dwellers and the government may use this to some other things.

Last, the writer states that it also can help to protect the biodiversity. If the money is spent on establishing protected area, the diversity of plants and animals can be maintained. By contrasted, the professor think this claims does not hold water. It is because if people are encouraged to plant new trees, they will chose those can bring them commercial benefits. It will do nothing to promote the goal of forest biodiversity.
