第266期：hush money 封口費

今天我們要學的這個詞其實一看就明白，hush money --- 封口費。

用英語簡單地解釋就是，money paid to someone to prevent them from disclosing embarrassing or discreditable information，或者再簡單一點：money that is given to someone to make them keep something secret.

要讓人閉口不談某件事，你總得給人家點甜頭，這個甜頭英語就叫sweetner. 很多時候，封口費(hush money)和甜頭(sweetner)其實是一回事。還有一種說法叫protection money，這個比較直白一些。

Hush是什麼？——就是語氣詞「噓」。

*順便擴展一下，hush除了是語氣詞「噓」之外，也是動詞，意思是「使......安靜下來」，也是名詞，意思是「寂靜」。它的形容詞是hushed, 意思是「寂靜的」。建議大家自己分別找一個例句把這一組詞都學會。

從法律的意義上講，hush money的本質是一種賄賂(bribe).

Hush money is a slang term for a form of bribery in which one person or party offers another an attractive sum of money or other enticement, in exchange for remaining silent about some illegal, stigmatic, or shameful behavior, action, or other fact about the person or party who has made the offer.
