A young woman contacted me earlier this year to discuss her PhD adviser. He would follow her around the lab, shaming her in others』 presence, yelling that she was incompetent and that her experiments were done incorrectly. She wanted nothing more than to minimize contact with him, but she felt trapped. Starting in another lab would mean losing nearly three years of work.

1. contact
a. contact在文中作動詞，是聯繫，聯絡的意思，注意contact是及物動詞，後面可以直接跟賓語，不需要介詞。
例句：You can contact me without hesitation whenever you have a question.
當你遇到問題的時候都可以不要猶豫，聯繫我。
b. 結合動詞的意思，contact作名詞也有聯繫的意思
常用片語：
keep in contact 保持聯繫
be in contact 處於通訊聯絡狀態
break off/lose contact 中斷/失去聯繫
make contact 建立聯繫
come in/into contact 開始接觸
c. contact作名詞還有交往、往來、關係的意思，大家可以這樣理解：聯繫的多了就關係好了呀～

2. incompetent
a. incompetent 在文中作形容詞，是沒有能力的，沒有資質的的意思，大家應該可以看出in是表示否定的前綴，所以把in去掉，competent也是形容詞表示有資質的，有能力的。
常用片語：
be competent to do sth. 有資質做某事
be competent at/in sth. 能勝任某事
例句：He is competent at drawing.
他在畫畫方面很有資質。
b. 讓我們來看看與competent相關的一族詞吧～大家可以一起記憶 competence是名詞，表示資質，能力。
c. compete是動詞，表示競爭。
動詞用法：compete with sb for sth 為了…與…競爭
例句：Companies have to compete with each other for this contract.
各大公司為了簽下這份合同不得不互相競爭。
*這裡的contract是合同的意思，和剛才說的contact一詞長的很像，同學們千萬不要混淆了～
d. competitive也是形容詞，表示競爭性的，或有競爭力的。
例句：Sellers have no right to decide price in perfectly competitive market.
賣家在完全競爭市場中沒有權利決定價格。
e. competitor是名詞，表示競爭者（大家注意一下很多or或er結尾的詞都表示人，比如說writer是作者～）

Studies suggest rates of bullying are higher in academic settings than in other workplaces, but I have no evidence that scientists are more likely than the general population to have characteristics of abusers or their targets. I do think that academic science is a breeding ground for toxic dynamics, mainly because lab heads have so much power over their trainees.

breeding

Similar to non-physical domestic abuse, Abusive supervision is defined by sustained hostile behavior, such as ridiculing, threatening, backbiting and blaming. Abusive supervisors often target specific individuals: some pick on their best workers, but poor performers are especially vulnerable. So are those who are different from their adviser, including in gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation. The strongest predictors involve deeper differences, such as working styles, that promote conflict.
