八月秋高風怒號,

a. During autumn in the eighth month, sky was high and wind was strong.

卷我屋上三重茅。

茅飛度江灑江郊,

安得廣廈千萬間,

吾廬獨破受凍死亦足。

白話譯文

八月里秋深,狂風怒號,狂風捲走了我屋頂上好幾層茅草。

茅草亂飛,渡過浣花溪,散落在對岸江邊。

飛得高的茅草纏繞在高高的樹梢上,

飛得低的飄飄洒洒沉落到池塘和窪地里。

南村的一群兒童欺負我年老沒力氣,

竟忍心這樣當面做「賊」搶東西,

毫無顧忌地抱著茅草跑進竹林去了。

我嘴唇乾燥也喝止不住,回來後拄著拐杖,獨自嘆息。

一會兒風停了,天空中烏雲像墨一樣黑,

深秋天空陰沉迷濛漸漸黑下來了。

布被蓋了多年,又冷又硬,像鐵板似的。

孩子睡覺姿勢不好,把被子蹬破了。

一下雨屋頂漏水,屋內沒有一點兒乾燥的地方,

房頂的雨水像麻線一樣不停地往下漏。

自從安史之亂之後,我睡眠的時間很少,長夜漫漫,屋漏床濕,怎能挨到天亮。

如何能得到千萬間寬敞高大的房子,

普遍地庇覆天下間貧寒的讀書人,讓他們開顏歡笑,

房子在風雨中也不為所動,安穩得像是山一樣?唉!

什麼時候眼前出現這樣高聳的房屋,

到那時即使我的茅屋被秋風所吹破,我自己受凍而死也心甘情願!
