英語學習的三大騙局

英語學習的三大騙局

It is difficult to find ones proper way to learn English. As an experienced English learner, however, I can at least list three wrong methods here, and hopefully, through reading this posting, you can avoid these traps on your journey.

1: 「I can improve my English through watching American TV series and movies.」

Nonsense, when you say so, you are merely finding an excuse to entertain yourself. When there are Chinese subtitles, your eyes will naturally focus on them and your ears will simply filter all English. Even if you can find films without Chinese subtitles, characters facial expressions and body language can always facilitate your understanding of them. It is said that when people communicate, their language only accounts for a minor part of their intercourse, and thus, even if you can turn off Chinese subtitles, learning in this way is far from being efficient. And when you turn off subtitles, the entertainment immediately ceases to be intriguing and becomes a torment. Since it is painful and inefficient at the same time, why bother to use it?

On the other hand, if you can already watch American TV series and movies without subtitles, then, instead of improving your English, it can at best maintain your current level.

2: 「After memorizing this vocabulary book, my English will be good.」

Well, if you are not a talent, chances are that you will give up in a few days. When there is a test to take in one month, CET 4, CET6, IELTS, whatever, you can digest one vocabulary book and cram for the test. And I must say that it is helpful in a way. But after the test, in a few days, all the vocabulary will disappear before you notice it. As the vocabulary is memorized in a mechanical style and few people can persist without the motivation of a test, this method is destined to be expedient. English learning is a marathon and a good method should transform your learning into an essential part of your life. I simply cannot imagine memorizing vocabulary as an attractive part of ones life.

Based upon your language capacity (since you can comprehend my posting), my suggestion is that you should never memorize vocabulary separately, which means it should be a bonus or supplementation to your reading or listening of English. For instance, when reading some essays, you can check new vocabulary and add them to your word list. These words are met in a context and they are more likely to be digested in a more efficient and pleasant manner.

3: 「Through listening to my lessons, you can master English in 30 days.」

Seriously??! People who boast so are either salesmen or wizards. As a graduate of English major, I dare not say so after years of fighting. And my professors in Peking University never say that they can aid their students to make it in 30 days. Teachers can teach you the method, but it takes your own efforts to achieve the goal in a course of time. What is the exact length of it? It depends, maybe half a year, but it is surely longer than 30 days. English learning is not a sprint but a marathon(Sorry for the cliche, but it turns out to be a true one). Be patient and enjoy the process, and when you look back in half a year, you will get what you deserve.

PS. I have built a Wechat group for English learners, dont hesitate to join us through sending me your brief introduction and Wechat.

I can also teach online. You can reach out to me when it suits you.
