US College Food Options Ranked Best to Worst
A UPenn alum』s guide on where to eat in your four years, based on price, quality and convenience
Evan Tao
1. Free food events
Speaker series, networking events and socials help you get to know your classmates and learn things outside the classroom, but they can also fill an empty stomach. You see, these extracurricular events get school funding to order catering from nearby restaurants. So, you can attend these events to eat their food, whether or not you』re interested in the event itself. It』s like going out to a restaurant, except more convenient and at no cost. For UPenn students, we used a 「Free Food at Penn」 group on Facebook -- with over 4,000 members -- where we could see up-to-date information every day on free catering.
3. Restaurants
Restaurants are a solid option in terms of quality -- you can trust the food you』re eating. However, they suffer in price and convenience. Early on in the school semester, you』ll have time to eat out with friends; however, by the time your first midterms roll around, you』ll be spending a great deal of time in the library or in your dorm. During this period, restaurants aren』t as viableofa food option. As the semester winds down, student groups will start to hold celebrations and gatherings again, and you』ll find yourself going to restaurants again.
4. Dining halls
Restaurants can be hit-or-miss depending on where you go; dining halls are consistent across most colleges or universities. Their food selection is wide, but they get boring rather quickly. In addition, they』re about as time-consuming as restaurants to go to. Thus, they』re ranked quite low on this list. On the plus side, each time you walk into a dining hall you can eat as much as you want --so remember to fill up!
5. Cooking
Cooking on your own is highly unadvised. Not only is buying groceries time-consuming, but solo cooking isolates you from your peers -- and college is all about making friends and spending time with others. Here』s the catch, though. Cooking with others can be a memorable college experience. It』s a great way to de-stress from schoolwork and spend time with classmates learning a skill you』ll need for the rest of your life. If you decide to cook with others, it』ll probably happen more in your junior and senior years since, typically, that』s when you』ll be allowed to live off-campus and hence have your own kitchen.
So, those are the five best places to eat on US college campuses. Remember that every school has its own character, its own strength and its own food options. So to get the latest scoop on schools you』re interested in attending, reach out to existing students or schedule a campus visit. Happy eating!
