Synopsis

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom Sawyer is a mischievous and smart boy from the town of St. Petersburg, U.S.A.

His parents died long time ago.

He lives with his aunt but the aunt could not keep him under control.

He is not one of those good kids who are well behaved and minding their own business.

Among all the kids in town, he is their leader.

They follow him in playing 「war」 game.

He pulls pranks, likes circus, does handstand, enjoys fantasizing, and wishes to become soldier or cowboy.

In the eyes of his little companions there is nothing Tom cannot do.

Recently he has come up with an idea to become a pirate.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom has several friends, namely Joe, Ben, and Jim, but the one whom he really gets along with in trouble-making is Huck—a filthy young nomad in town.

Huck』s father is a perennial drunk and never watches over Huck.

So Huck has become a loner good-for-nothing 「street kid」.

In the eyes of town folks, he is a bum.

But to the little children, he is seen as an interesting buddy.

Tom tells Huck on his idea in becoming a pirate.

Huck says all pirates have great courage and they agree to meet in the graveyard at midnight to test their valor.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom pretends to fall asleep to fool his aunt and then goes to the graveyard with Huck.

Under bone-chilling wind they witness a violent tussle, and Injun Joe kills a doctor and blames the murder on a drunk named Potter.

The two children are afraid of vicious Injun Joe and vow to each other they will never tell on the incident.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon recognizing their courage has passed the test, Tom and Joe Harper bring along some food which they 「steal」 from home.

They take Huck with them and go to a riverbank of Mississippi River where they find a small raft.

They peddle to Jackson Island downstream.

This completely deserted place with no one around has become the fun-filled headquarter of the three 「pirates」.

There are cloudless bright night, shiny stars, shrub woods, bonfire picnic, sandy beach, grass patches, trees, birds, squirrels, butterflies, etc. Adults』 scolding, preacher』s lecturing, judge』s stern face, and teacher』s chastisement are things of the past.

They are worry-free and carefree.

This place is practically a paradise and sanctuary.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

People in town have been looking for these children in the past few days and those town people are worried sick.

But traces of the children are nowhere to be found.

Slowly the town people are losing hope of ever finding the children again.

On Sunday, the town people hold a gathering in commemoration of the three kids.

Just when those people are overwhelmed with sadness, the preacher finds those three mischief-makers walk to their relatives in the church as if nothing has happened.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trial starts in town against Potter on the murder case.

Tom and Huck testify in court for Potter.

Injun Joe in attendance of the courtroom is shocked and flees.

Tom and Huck become heroes of the small town.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom』s sense of adventure has not dwindled a tiny bit.

He knows legend has it that pirates buried treasure under old dried-up grotesque tree, and he and Huck are going to hunt for treasure.

One day they go to search in a haunted house and really run into ghost-like characters inside—Injun Joe and a stranger.

They are prepared to hide the gold coins which they stole and talk about burying the coins 「under Number Two cross」.

The conversation is clearly overheard by Tom and Huck hiding in the attic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Becky, a classmate sharing Tom』s table in school, is the daughter of the Grand-Judge Thatcher.

She asks her parents to organize a picnic with her classmates up the hill.

The children take a ferry to the hill outside of town.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All of the children arrive at the fun-filled McDougal』s Cave.

In entering the gloomy cave in single file, the children are curious and nervous.

Even for the adventure-seeking Tom, it is his first time here.

The crisscrossing pathways in the cave are like a maze.

The children in the cave are playing, frolicking, and then converging to the cave exit from different directions in succession.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But Tom and Becky lose their way in the cave.

Tom, an inspired explorer, goes with Becky in random directions inside the cave but they fail to find a way out.

Becky is panicky.

But Tom, armed with the courage and wisdom innate to boy, is confident.

He consoles Becky and continues to search patiently for an exit out of the cave.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inside the cave, Tom runs into Injun Joe.

The on-the-run Joe is already scared stiff and scurries away at hearing signs of Tom』s presence.

Tom and Becky finally find an exit and reunite with their families.

The two children rest for five to six days after the close call.

Tom goes to the judge』s home to visit Becky.

Mr. Thatcher tells him: 「To prevent people from getting lost again, the exit of McDougal』s Cave has been sealed off.」

Tom says there is still Joe, the on-the-lam criminal, inside the cave.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The town folks flock to McDougal』s Cave and find Joe has been dead inside the cave for many days.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom takes Huck along to the cave to hunt for treasure.

Finally underneath a big rock marked with a cross sign they dig out those gold coins hidden by Joe.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom and Huck row a small boat back to town, and what a big shock their adventure would be to the town people.

Highlights

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday afternoon came, and waned to the twilight.

The village of St. Petersburg still mourned.

The lost children had not been found.

Public prayers had been offered up for them, and many and many a private prayer that had the petitioners whole heart in it; but still no good news came from the cave.

The majority of the searchers had given up the quest and gone back to their daily avocations, saying that it was plain the children could never be found.

Mrs. Thatcher was very ill, and a great part of the time delirious.

People said it was heartbreaking to hear her call her child, and raise her head and listen a whole minute at a time, then lay it wearily down again with a moan.

Aunt Polly had drooped into a settled melancholy, and her gray hair had grown almost white.

The village went to its rest on Tuesday night, sad and forlorn.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Away in the middle of the night a wild peal burst from the village bells, and in a moment the streets were swarming with frantic half-clad people, who shouted, "Turn out! turn out! theyre found! theyre found!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tin pans and horns were added to the din, the population massed itself and moved toward the river, met the children coming in an open carriage drawn by shouting citizens, thronged around it, joined its homeward march, and swept magnificently up the main street roaring huzzah after huzzah!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The village was illuminated; nobody went to bed again; it was the greatest night the little town had ever seen.

During the first half-hour a procession of villagers filed through Judge Thatchers house, seized the saved ones and kissed them, squeezed Mrs. Thatchers hand, tried to speak but couldnt—and drifted out raining tears all over the place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aunt Pollys happiness was complete, and Mrs. Thatchers nearly so.

It would be complete, however, as soon as the messenger dispatched with the great news to the cave should get the word to her husband.

Tom lay upon a sofa with an eager auditory about him and told the history of the wonderful adventure, putting in many striking additions to adorn it withal; and closed with a description of how he left Becky and went on an exploring expedition; how he followed two avenues as far as his kite-line would reach; how he followed a third to the fullest stretch of the kite-line, and was about to turn back when he glimpsed a far-off speck that looked like daylight; dropped the line and groped toward it, pushed his head and shoulders through a small hole, and saw the broad Mississippi rolling by!

And if it had only happened to be night he would not have seen that speck of daylight and would not have explored that passage anymore!

He told how he went back for Becky and broke the good news and she told him not to fret her with such stuff, for she was tired, and knew she was going to die, and wanted to.

He described how he labored with her and convinced her; and how she almost died for joy when she had groped to where she actually saw the blue speck of daylight; how he pushed his way out at the hole and then helped her out; how they sat there and cried for gladness; how some men came along in a skiff and Tom hailed them and told them their situation and their famished condition; how the men didnt believe the wild tale at first, "because," said they, "you are five miles down the river below the valley the cave is in"—then took them aboard, rowed to a house, gave them supper, made them rest till two or three hours after dark and then brought them home.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before day-dawn, Judge Thatcher and the handful of searchers with him were tracked out, in the cave, by the twine clews they had strung behind them, and informed of the great news.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three days and nights of toil and hunger in the cave were not to be shaken off at once, as Tom and Becky soon discovered.

They were bedridden all of Wednesday and Thursday, and seemed to grow more and more tired and worn, all the time.

Tom got about, a little, on Thursday, was downtown Friday, and nearly as whole as ever Saturday; but Becky did not leave her room until Sunday, and then she looked as if she had passed through a wasting illness.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom learned of Hucks sickness and went to see him on Friday, but could not be admitted to the bedroom; neither could he on Saturday or Sunday.

He was admitted daily after that, but was warned to keep still about his adventure and introduce no exciting topic.

The Widow Douglas stayed by to see that he obeyed.

At home Tom learned of the Cardiff Hill event; also that the "ragged mans" body had eventually been found in the river near the ferry-landing; he had been drowned while trying to escape, perhaps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About a fortnight after Toms rescue from the cave, he started off to visit Huck, who had grown plenty strong enough, now, to hear exciting talk, and Tom had some that would interest him, he thought. Judge Thatchers house was on Toms way, and he stopped to see Becky.

The Judge and some friends set Tom to talking, and someone asked him ironically if he wouldnt like to go to the cave again.

Tom said he thought he wouldnt mind it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Judge said: "Well, there are others just like you, Tom, Ive not the least doubt.

But we have taken care of that. Nobody will get lost in that cave anymore."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Why?"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Because I had its big door sheathed with boiler iron two weeks ago, and triple-locked—and Ive got the keys."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom turned as white as a sheet.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Whats the matter, boy!

Here, run, somebody!

Fetch a glass of water!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The water was brought and thrown into Toms face.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ah, now youre all right.

What was the matter with you, Tom?"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh, Judge, Injun Joes in the cave!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
