Translation: Seizure of Birthday Gift Shipment by Trickery (Shi Naian)

時值六月，天氣炎熱，

The time was in June and the weather was sweltering hot.

挑著生辰綱的軍漢在崎嶇小路上行走，

Soldiers shouldering loads of birthday gifts on bamboo sticks were walking on rugged footpaths.

個個氣喘噓噓，汗水淋漓，苦不堪言。

Each one of them was agonizing with wheezing breath and drenching sweat.

有的走慢了，楊志就用藤條抽打，喝令: 「快走！」

Some moved a bit slower and Yang Zhi would lash them with a cane while yelling: 「Get moving quickly!」

他們到了黃泥岡。小路兩邊是松林，

They arrived at Yellow Earth Ridge, and on both sides of the path were pine woods.

軍漢實在走不動了，

The soldiers were too tired to walk any further.

都放下擔子，到樹蔭下躺倒休息。

They put down the loads and went under tree shade to take a rest lying down.

楊志喝道∶「這是什麼地方，

敢在這裡乘涼，

眾軍漢叫苦說∶「你把我們剁成八塊，我們也走不動了。」

The soldiers were complaining, 「You can cut us up into pieces but we simply cannot move a muscle.」

兩個虞侯和老都管喘著氣慢慢走上來。

Two young officers and a senior old officer slowly walked up while gasping for air.

老都管見楊志打軍漢，勸道∶「楊提轄，實在熱得走不動了，

The old officer saw Yang Zhi whipping the soldiers and urged: 「Colonel Yang, it』s really too hot to walk.

別怪他們吧。」

Don』t blame them.」

楊志說∶「這是黃泥岡，正是強人出沒的地方，

Yang Zhi said, 「This Yellow Earth Ridge is where bandits are active.

怎敢在這裡停腳！」

How could anyone dare to take a break here?」

Yang Zhi turned a deaf ear to the soldiers』 beseeching.

舉起藤條說∶「不走的，吃俺二十棍！」

He raised the cane and said: 「If you don』t get going I』m going to give you twenty lashes.」

他剛要打下，忽見松林里有人探頭觀望，

Just when he was about to bring down the cane, suddenly he saw someone poking his head out of the pine woods to take a peek.

便急忙放下藤條拿起朴刀，追進松林喝道∶「你好大膽子，敢來看我的貨物！」

He quickly put down the cane, picked up his broadsword, dashed into the pine forest and shouted: 「You sure have guts and dare to plot against my goods.」

楊志近前一看，

Yang Zhi walked up to take a look.

林中一字兒擺著七輛江州車子，

Lining across in a row inside the woods were seven Jiangzhou-style wheelbarrows.

晁蓋七人假扮推車的在乘涼。

Seven people including Chao Gai who disguised themselves as barrow-pushers were catching the breeze there.

楊志問道∶「你們是幹什麼的？」

Yang Zhi asked: 「What do you guys do for a living?」

晁蓋道∶「我們是販賣棗子到東京去的。」

Zhao Gai said: 「We are selling jujubes to East Capital.」

楊志這才放下心來。

After hearing that, Yang Zhi was relieved.

白勝挑了一擔酒桶走上岡來，邊走邊唱∶「赤日炎炎似火燒，

Bai Sheng carried a load of wine casks on bamboo poles over his shoulder and sang as he walked up the ridge: 「Red sun scorches like fire.

野田禾稻半枯焦。

Field paddy is half-burnt to a crisp.

農夫心內如湯煮，

Farmers』 anxiety is like boiling soup.

樓上王孫把扇搖。」

Yet royalties upstairs are waving hand-fans.」

他走到松林邊上，放下酒擔乘涼。

He walked to the edge of the forest and put down the load of wine to catch a breeze.

眾軍漢見白勝是賣酒的，便說∶「我們又熱又渴，

The soldiers saw Bai Sheng was a wine vendor and so they said: 「We are hot and thirsty.

何不買些酒吃，也解暑氣。」

Why don』t we buy some wine to drink to get relief from the summer heat?」

楊志聽了訓斥道∶「你們這些村鳥知道什麼，

Yang Zhi heard and scolded: 「What do hicks like you know?

全不知路途上艱險，多少好漢給蒙汗藥麻翻了。」

You have no clue how dangerous it is on the road and how many tough guys have been drugged with knockout drops.」

晁蓋七人出來說∶「口渴得很，

The seven Chao Gai gang came out and said: 「We are very thirsty.

賣給我們一桶酒喝。」

Sell us a bucket of wine to drink.」

白勝說∶「好，

Bai Sheng said: 「Great!

五貫錢一桶。

It is five strings of copper coins for one bucket.

只是沒有碗，

There are no bowls.

就用兩把酒瓢舀著喝吧！」

So you need to use the two ladles to scoop up the wine and drink.」

眾人一邊吃棗子，一邊喝酒。

Thoose people were eating jujubes while drinking wine.

吳用舀了半瓢酒，說去取點棗子，進松林里去了。

Wu Yong scooped up half a ladle of wine, said he was getting some jujube, and went into the woods.

吳用到樹林里，把酒倒掉，從衣袋裡掏出紙包，把蒙汗藥倒在瓢里，走出松林。

Bai Sheng took the ladle away from Wu Yong』s hand, stirred it a couple of times in the wine bucket, and said: 「You look respectable but definitely are not an honorable person.」

眾軍漢見賣棗子的喝了酒，都說∶「我們也買一桶吧！

The soldiers saw the jujube vendors drink the wine and said: 「Let us buy a bucket.

實在太熱太渴了。」

We really are too hot and thirsty.」

老都管也說∶「岡子那邊沒處討水喝，

The old senior officer also said: 「There is no place to ask for water on the other side of the ridge.

就讓大家買了喝吧！」

Let all of us buy some wine to drink.」

楊志見賣棗子的喝了沒事，就說∶「既然老都管說了，就去買了喝吧！」

Yang Zhi saw the jujube vendors were fine after drinking the wine, and so he said: 「Since old officer suggests it, then go ahead and buy some wine to drink.」

眾軍漢湊了五貫錢去買酒，

The soldiers gathered up five strings of copper coins to buy wine.

白勝卻說∶「不賣了，

But Bai Sheng said: 「I am not selling.

這酒里有蒙汗藥。」

This wine has knockout drug.」

眾軍漢陪笑道∶「那是說笑話，

The soldiers laughed apologetically and said: 「That』s a joke.

何必當真。」

Don』t take it seriously.」

吳用把白勝一推，說∶「大家都出門在外，

Wu Yong nudged Bai Sheng and said: 「We are all on the road.

做點好事吧！」

Do something nice.」

說著把酒桶送給軍漢。

Then he gave the bucket of wine to the soldiers.

吳用又拿些棗子說∶「給你們下酒。」

Wu Yong picked up some jujubes and said: 「Take these as snacks for the wine.」

眾軍漢謝了，輪流用瓢喝酒。

The soldiers thanked him and took turns using the ladle to drink wine.

連老都管、虞侯和楊志都喝了。

Even the senior officer, the young officers and Yang Zhi drank some wine as well.

頃刻間，楊志等十五人個個頭重腳輕，先後軟倒了。

Shortly Yang Zhi』s group of fifteen people felt dizzy and passed out one by one.

晁蓋等七人馬上推著小車從松林里出來，把棗子倒在地上，把十一擔金銀珠寶裝進車裡推著就走。

In seeing the others were motionless lying on the ground and all the valuables were gone, he pointed at them and said angrily: 「It』s your fault not listening to me and getting us into this trap.

丟了生辰綱，連累洒家。」

Now the birthday gift shipment is gone and you get me into a big mess.」

拿起朴刀，嘆了口氣，下岡去了。

He picked up the broadsword, let out a sigh, and walked down the ridge.

眾人這才醒過來，老都管說∶「生辰綱失了，楊志也走了，

When the others came to, the senior officer said: 「The birthday gift shipment is lost and Yang Zhi is gone.

我們怎麼辦？」

有人說∶「就說是楊志和強人串通一氣，用蒙汗藥把我們麻翻，把金銀珠寶全搶走了。」

One person said: 「We』ll say Yang Zhi colluded with the bandits, drugged us and took all the valuables away.」

眾人立時收拾停當，回去稟報去了。

So they immediately packed their stuff and returned to make a report.

再說楊志走到一片樹林里，

Yang Zhi went into a forest.

突然一個赤裸上身、背上刺著花的和尚對他喝道∶「你這混蛋，

Suddenly a naked-from-the-waist-up and tattooed-at-back monk yelled at him: 「You scoundrel!

是哪裡來的？」

Where do you come from?」

楊志反問∶「你是哪裡的和尚？」

Yang Zhi asked him back: 「Which place do you belong to, Monk?」

那和尚不回話，掄起禪杖就打，

The monk did not reply, but wielded his Buddhist cane to strike at him.

楊志挺起朴刀相迎。

Yang Zhi raised his broadsword to counter the attack.

兩人就在樹林里打了起來。

Just like that the two of them fought in the woods.

那和尚賣個破綻跳出圈外，

The monk feigned a flaw in his defense to induce a strike from the opponent and jumped away.

喝聲∶「且慢！你這青面漢子是什麼人？」

Then he shouted: 「Who are you, green-faced man?」

楊志道∶「俺是青面獸楊志。」

Yang Zhi said: 「I』m Yang Zhi—nicknamed Green-Faced Beast.」

和尚道∶「俺是花和尚魯智深。」

The monk said: 「I』m Lu Zhishen, known also as Tattooed Monk.」

楊志笑道∶「你不是在相國寺嗎？

Yang Zhi smiled and said: 「Don』t you station at Xiangguo Temple?

怎麼來到這裡？」

Why is it that you end up here」

魯智深道∶「因俺救了林沖，高俅不許相國寺收留俺，

Lu Zhishen said: 「It is because I rescued Lin Chong and Gao Qiu ordered Xiangguo Temple not to let me stay.

俺想上二龍山寶珠寺安身，寨主鄧龍不肯，

I wanted to go up to Baozhu Temple on Erlong Mountain and settle in, but Gang Leader Deng Long would not allow me.

俺打敗了他，

I defeated him in a fight.

他就跑上山去，把住關口，

He ran up the mountain and set up a defense in the passageway.

俺攻不上去。」

I was not able to break through.」

楊志引魯智深住進操刀鬼曹正開的酒店。

Yang Zhi took Lu Zhishen along to check into the inn of Cao Zheng, nicknamed Broadsword-Wielding Devil.

曹正和楊志相識，

Cao and Yang were acquaintances.

聽說他倆要上二龍山，就說∶「我有一計，不知兩位中不中意？」

When Cao heard the two of them were going up Erlong Mountain, he said: 「I have a plan and I wonder if the two of you would be interested?」

楊志道∶「願聞良策。」

Yang Zhi said: 「I would like to hear about your great plan.」

曹正如此這般地說了一遍，二人決定依計而行。

Cao Zheng gave them all the details and the two of them decided to follow the plan.

次日，曹正和打扮成鄉下人的楊志把魯智深用活結繩索捆了，

The next day Cao Zheng and Yang Zhi (who disguised himself as a hillbilly) tied up Lu Zhishen with slipknots.

押著來到二龍山關口。

They took Lu under guard to the front gate of Erlong Mountain.

曹正對鄧龍說∶「這胖和尚說要請梁山泊來打二龍山，還要掃平附近村莊，

Cao Zheng said to Deng Long: 「This fat monk said he was going to invite the gang at Liangshanpo to attack Erlong Mountain and wipe out the neighborhood villages as well.

我把他灌醉捆了獻給大王。」

I got him drunk, tied him up and offered him to you—the almighty leader.」

鄧龍大喜，開關讓他們上山。

Deng Long was thrilled and opened the gate to let them up the mountain.

曹正等人上了山，就把捆著魯智深的繩索結頭偷偷一抽。

After Cao Zheng and his cohorts went up the mountain, they stealthily pulled the slipknot that fastened Lu Zhishen.

魯智深鬆開手臂，拿過楊志手中的禪杖，掄起一杖將鄧龍打死，

Lu freed his arms, took the Buddhist cane from Yang Zhi』s hand, and struck Deng Long dead with one blow.

眾嘍羅紛紛跪地投降。

All the rank-and-file outlaws dropped to their knees and surrendered.

魯智深和楊志從此當了山寨寨主。

Thenceforth Lu Zhishen and Yang Zhi became the gang-leaders at the mountain fortress.
