Is the idea of environment in architecture only ever reducible to 『environmental architecture』? For AA unit masters Ricardo de Ostos and Nannette Jackowski the answer is a resolute no. Instead they offer an alternative reading of 『environment』, in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through visually compelling narratives of architecture. Illustrating their approach, this book presents ten years of student projects, all prompted by the unit』s visits to extreme geographic contexts – from the rainforests of Brazil to the quarries of northern India. With additional photographic documentation and conversations with Lebbeus Woods, Geoff Manaugh and Peter Cook, Scavengers & Other Creatures in Promised Lands explores the gripping power of myth and fiction as radical narratives for imagining the near future of cities and forests.

NAJA& DE OSTOS is a London based architectural studio exploring symbioticrelations between emerging cultural patterns and architectural narratives. With a strong research based design focus attitude Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo de Ostos seek to generate an adventurous (and sometimes excitingly dangerous) but beneficial built environment through critical and challenging speculation.
Their work is largely engaged in ambiguous situations within urban and socialdynamics for which the studio explores alternative narrative-like scripts. Projects addressing catastrophic scenarios, contaminated landscapes, corporate fields and newborn cities are among the architects diversified portfolio. Although different in scope and scale, all their projects intend to craft a sense of place. From human-size installations to building-size architectural propositions to large-scale infrastructural projects NaJa & deOstos seeks to create an interwoven ecology of technology and culturally modified nature.
Amida contemporary fascination for techniques and their commercialization, NaJa& deOstos develop an interdisciplinary architectural language, built orun-built, that stimulates a constant questioning of our roles as creators and consumers in an irresolute and often contradictory discipline.
