Some people think healthcare should be the governments first priority while others believe that there exist higher priorities that the government should spend taxpayers』 money on. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

For centuries the debate has raged over the role of government and what/how they should allocate their spending, in particular whether they should emulate countries like the UK and make healthcare their main spending priority or instead focus on other areas. I believe that there certainly exist more pressing priorities for the government to spend money on, particularly since the money is provided by the taxpayers.

Those who maintain that healthcare should be the government』s first priority often point to the fact that healthcare can be a simple matter of life or death. If the government doesn』t provide healthcare, then individuals who cannot afford to do so will not be vaccinated, will not receive treatment in emergencies or be able to receive treatment for other conditions, some of which, like diabetes, may require treatment for life.

However whilst few would deny that healthcare is important for the government to support, one could also posit that there do exist higher priorities for the government. One argument is that in some cases, government spending on healthcare could extend to providing treatment for cases where the individual has engaged in risky behaviour such as extreme sports, drug abuse or excessive smoking. In these cases perhaps it is not fair that every taxpayer』s hard earned money should be spent on providing for irresponsibility.

Additionally the government』s focus should perhaps be on those areas which not only benefit everybody but also those which it would be inappropriate or inefficient for the government to provide. In particular I believe that it would be problematic for things like national defence to not be provided for the government because of the risks to the safety of the entire nation and international stability; or for the government not to spend money regulating industries who pollute or provide public infrastructure.

For these reasons, on the basis of both fairness and the necessity of the government focussing on other areas, I believe that whilst healthcare is certainly important, there exist higher priorities that the government should spend taxpayers』 money on.
