Something you should know about Honor Play

Although been available in China for two weeks, the new model will be officially available in other countries after the global launch. Given that a lot of Chinese Honor fans have already got the machine, there are some highly useful information based on their experience and feedback. And I will share some key info with you:)

What you can expect from Honor Play

a. Flagship chip Kirin 970 - and the scheduling and limitation of frequencies are about the same as other more expensive models with Kirin 970, such as Honor 10, Honor View 10 and Mate 10. This is almost a guarantee of more than enough computing power for daily use and gaming.

b. It sports an IPS screen with 85% NTSC gamut, presenting very pleasing colours - it should be on the same level of the screen on Honor 10.

c. Evolved AI camera - the brand new Honor Play will have the capability to recognise more than 500+ scenarios, which means the camera can automatically adjust the colours, hues, contrast and so on to output the best possible result of the photo based on hardware. Considering that the CMOS of Honor Play is not the top-notch model (that』s a gaming-focused smartphone), the image quality of it is quite eye-candy.

d. The much-favoured feature thanks to the perfect combination of hardware and software - the GPU Turbo Technology. It is not exclusive for Honor Play (but may be only available on some flagship models until the next batch of EMUI update), therefore, many older models, even those equipped with Kirin 659, will be ensured to have that magical feature after rom update.

The GPU Turbo, in my opinion, is a bit like the Crimson or Adrenalin update of AMD graphics card - the gaming experience, mainly the stability of frame rate, is largely improved with hardware unchanged. This is for now the most budget-friendly way to dramatically increase the gaming performance of Huawei/Honor models.

e. According to the on-site test at the Chinese launch event in the game PUBG, Honor Play has even more stable frame rate compared to Xiaomi 8 with Snapdragon 845. This has been proven by many Chinese owners of Honor Play during the past two weeks.

f. Battery life should be quite optimistic, just on par with Honor View 10, with Honor Play』s 3750 mah battery. By the way the GPU Turbo feature is not only usable for gaming, but all the applications that consume GPU resources - that means the overall power consumption will be significantly reduced as well. Many Chinese users have already posted their battery life test on Honor Chinese official forum, and I found that even for heavy users in every term, Honor Play can still handle it.

g. 3.5 headphone jack is a big plus for music lovers owning premium headphones. The sound quality is mid-to-high range with HISTEN sound effect enabled. By the way, talking about the gaming sound, Honor Play has a feature called "4D sound effect" to map accurate sound positioning using just the speaker of your phone - what a bonus!

h. Metal body is a clear differentiation compared to so many glass-body machines. The best thing is there is a special version in both black and red, with magnificent circuit etching pattern on the back. The name in English for this special version is yet to be decided, maybe the 「cool play version」 translated from the Chinese name?

But of course, the phone has some potential minuses as well for this price range. Consumer feedback highlights some of them:

α. the 19.5:9 screen ratio makes the phone a bit longer than most 「all-screen (w/without notch)」 phones. This may be a deal breaker for some people with smaller hands.

β. Glass material is still many users』 favourite for a modern smartphone.

γ. The front of the phone looks similar with many other models released earlier this year, and compared to the latest models from some competitors like Oppo (Find X) and Vivo (NEX), the design is a bit of a pull factor. But for me, I can definitely forgive that because of the price. Honor Play will be probably one of the best bang for buck on the market once available globally.

δ. The depth sensor for the dual camer is only 2M pixel. That made the illusion of shallow depth of field a bit quality-lacking, but that is not an issue for people who don』t usually need the relevant feature.

At the end of the day, this is just a ￥2000 (approx.) phone. So you really cant ask for more. Amazing value for money, absolutely impressive gaming experience, no siginificant shortcomings. Cant wait to see its performance in other countries, and I have every confident that it would be super-popular in there!
