塞繆爾·厄爾曼（Samuel Ullman 1840-1920）猶太人，生於德國。1851年，隨家人遷往美國的密西西比。厄爾曼不僅是著名的教育家，社會活動家，還是一位才華橫溢的大作家。1917年，77歲高齡的厄爾曼寫出了簡單明快，雋永深刻的散文詩《青春》。麥克阿瑟將軍對這篇小美文推崇備至，將其鑲進框架，掛在牆上，時常凝視，用以警醒、鞭策自己。後來，日本人在美國的軍事基地發現了這篇美文，它隨即便風靡日本。日本出版界一位資深人士曾說：在日本，幾乎每一位工業家都曾被厄爾曼的《青春》所鼓舞，其中不乏松下幸之助這樣的商業巨子。松下幸之助就曾把《青春》一文作為自己的座右銘。《青春》全文不足250字，短小精悍，雋永明快，寓意深刻，扣人心弦，讀來如聽晨鐘，如聞暮鼓，朝夕使人自警自策。

Youth

by Samuel UllmanYouth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; 青春不是年華，而是心境；it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; 青春不是桃面、丹唇、柔膝，

it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,

a vigor of the emotions;

而是深沉的意志、恢宏的想像和熾熱的感情；it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.青春如生命的深泉在涌流。

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage

over timidity of the appetite,

青春氣貫長虹，勇銳蓋過怯弱， for adventure over the love of ease. 進取壓倒苟安。This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. 如此銳氣，二十後生而有之，六旬老者更多見。

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

年歲有加，並非垂老；理想丟棄，方墮暮年。 Years may wrinkle the skin, 歲月悠悠，衰微只及肌膚；but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. 熱忱拋卻，頹唐必至靈魂。 Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.煩憂、惶恐、喪失自信，定使心靈扭曲，意氣如灰。

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being"s heart the lure of wonder,

the unfailing child-like appetite of what"s next,

and the joy of the game of living.

無論年屆花甲，抑或二八芳齡，

心中皆有生命之歡樂，奇蹟之誘惑，孩童般天真久盛不衰。

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;

so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

人人心中皆有無線電台，只要它從天上人間接受美好、希望、歡樂、勇氣和力量的信號，你就青春永駐。 When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty,

一旦天線倒塌，銳氣便被冰雪覆蓋，玩世不恭、自暴自棄油然而生，

即使年方二十，實已垂垂老矣；

but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

然則只要豎起天線，捕捉樂觀的信號，

你就有望在八十高齡告別塵寰時仍覺青春相伴左右。
