In Indonesia, since the ban on Chinese language was lifted in 2001, I heard from multiple accounts that Chinese language course starts becoming electives in some private and public schools in different cities.I"m also aware of many out-of-school Chinese language courses in Jakarta.

As of who actually learn Chinese, I noticed many Chinese ethnic Indonesians have been learning the language or at least expresses interests in learning it.I"m not sure about the popularity of Chinese language within the non-ethnic-Chinese population.

Some foreign languages that are quite popular for Indonesians to learn (from personal accounts) besides English:

- Arabic - because it is needed to read many Islamic literatures

- Japanese - due to closeness of pronunciation with Bahasa Indonesia, and the attraction of Japanese manga and cultural products

- Chinese - due to cultural ties of part of the population, or economic reason

- German - for pursuing education in general

- French - for pursuing music / art education

I can"t say on the relative popularity between the languages.

Alex Pascual, Chinese Language is my greatest addiction.

In Mexico it is notably popular.

In universities, crash courses for Mandarin are packed in the way a French or English class would be. Students are lured by the economic/employment prospects of being able to speak Chinese.

However, the desertion rate it is incredibly high. I would say 95% for each level.

Reasons are:

Laziness.

「Too hard」 (AKA Laziness).

No real interest in the people or the culture, so no motivation.

Terrible teaching. There are few teachers who are actually certified or have an idea of what they』re doing.

So yes, you will find many Mexicans who will be able to say 「Nihao, wo jiao Roberto」, but finding one who is actually fluent will be like finding this:

In Malaysia, pupils starting out at first grade equivalent can opt for national language schools where Bahasa Malaysia is the language of instruction or Chinese schools where Mandarin is the language of instruction. Chinese language schools tend to be of higher standard and pupils learn Mandarin that way. Also, I guess that some may want to learn Mandarin in case they want to do business with the Chinese in China.

South Korea is not my country (I"m a Mandarin-speaking ABC), but from having just been there last week I can tell you that wandering through the popular/touristy shipping districts, I often heard shop owners and employees hawking their wares in Mandarin just as much as, if not more than, in Korean.

At first I thought they just learned the basic sales phrases, but as I listened more closely, a lot of the vocabulary was quite advanced. The full weight of their fluency hit me after eavesdropping on some of their negotiations with Chinese tourists -- holy cow, they speak better Chinese than I do! After that, I realized I was way better off bargaining in Chinese than fumbling around in English, with which they struggled much more (especially the older generation).

Short answer, for South Korea, very popular, especially in tourism- and retail -related sectors.

When I started learning Chinese all those years ago, I remember it that most people back home thought it was a little strange. Some friends reccomended I study Spanish as there is much more opportunity to use it in the states. Others reccomended I study French or Japanese as these seemed like cooler languages to speak.

Now days, it is seems like many more people are learning Chinese. I think has a few reasons. The first is that China is ever growing and is becomming a massive player on the global market. The second, and probably most likely, is that my social circles have changed a lot. Many of my friends are Chinese natives or Chinese speakers, I work with Chinese companies and many of my online friends I met during my time in China. Even my online Chinese teacher has said that she and her colleagues have been surprised at the increase of students wanting to learn Chinese online.

I think if China』s relevance continues to grow, then it wont be so surprising that many people can speak basic Chinese in the near future. I』m not sure it can overthrow English as the international language, but it probably has the strongest chance out of most other languages.

In India, i guess it is close to zero. The foreign languages which are famous here are French and German. You can also find some Spanish but it"s not as prevalent as the former two. My college opened a centre for Chinese Study or something like that but does not offer mandarin, though it offers French and German.

Robert Sim, Chinese as a mother tongue

For Singapore, it is mandatory for students to lean their mother tongue. For Chinese, it is obviously Chinese. For the other races, some do learn Chinese as well due to various reasons such as influences from peers and for the fun of it. This not to say that Singaporean Chinese do not learn Bahasa or Hindu. I know of friends who can speak languages of the other main ethnicities in Singapore.

In my city, Houston, the Mandarin Magnet Immersion school was established in 2012. The primary purpose of this school is to fully immerse students in an educational setting.

With nearly 3 million speakers in the US, and 1 million students estimated by 2020, I"d say it"s a fairly popular language.

For anyone reading this, I"d strongly recommend learning Mandarin as soon it"ll overtake English as the business lingua franca.

Murali Krishna U

In India, I don"t think it"s popular but still there are interpreters working on this supporting Indian business people to work with Chinese.
