Welcome to IELTS Test Tips !IELTS Test Tips – Listening
The IELTS Listening test is divided into four sections that assess your ability to understand conversations and lectures on both general and academic topics. The Listening test lasts 30 minutes and requires you to answer 40 questions.
Listening tip 1: English is out there – listen widely for it.
If you are living in an English-speaking country, remember that English is all around you. Do as Siddhi recommends and eavesdrop – listen to people speaking in places such as cafés or shops.
If you are not living in an English-speaking country, listen to English-language spoken on the TV, radio or Internet.
Listening tip 2: During the Listening test
The Listening test is only played once, so listen carefully!
Use the 30-second breaks to read the questions and underline the key words.
Be a step ahead – be prepared to hear the answers to more than one question.
Transfer your answers carefully to the Answer Sheet at the end of the test.
Additional tips :
Listen to different accents of English speakers.
Spelling is important in the Listening test – look at the spelling of names, places and words on signs, in shops and in English publications.
IELTS Test Tips – Speaking
The IELTS Speaking test involves an 11 – 14 minute interview with a trained IELTS examiner. You will be asked to answer questions on a range of both familiar and general interest topics. The Speaking Test is divided into three parts:
Part 1: The Introduction and Interview
The examiner asks you questions on topics that are familiar to you.
Part 2: The Individual Long Turn
The examiner gives you a card with a topic and questions (prompts), which you must speak about for one to two minutes.
Part 3: The Two-way Discussion
The examiner asks you more challenging questions related to the topic in Part 2.
Speaking tip 1: Reading tips news-flash
In the Reading test, get to know the Question Booklet, particularly the topics of the reading passages and the question types for each.
Allow a maximum of 20 minutes to answer the questions for each passage.
Write your answers directly onto the Answer Sheet.
Practise answering Reading Tests in the test time (one hour).
Additional tips :
Become acquainted with the different question types used in the Reading test.
Practise answering the more difficult question types, and time yourself. Some of the more difficult question types are: Yes/No/Not Given questions, Summary Completion questions, and Paragraph Matching Headings questions.
Speaking tip 2: The Speaking test is an interview, not a conversation
The IELTS Speaking test is an interview, so you should do most of the talking.
Make the length of your answers appropriate for the question: answer simple information questions (e.g. Where are you from?) with a brief answer; answer more detailed questions more fully (e.g. Why do you think some people are more musical than others?).
Additional tip :
The Speaking test is a formal interview, so the examiner will be polite but formal. Don』t worry if the examiner doesn』t talk or smile. The examiner is giving you the chance to talk as much as possible and is concentrating carefully on what you say.
Speaking tip 3: Present yourself confidently
Present yourself confidently – first impressions count!
Use good eye contact and posture when you are speaking with the examiner.
Answer the questions positively – don』t make comments about how nervous you are!
Additional tips :
Use appropriate body language, facial expression_r and gestures for the interview.
Don"t apologise for your English ability or say you need an IELTS 6.5!
Final impressions also count. At the end of the interview, politely thank the examiner, eg 『Thank you for your time. It was nice talking with you.』
Speaking tip 4: Don"t memorise your answers
Examiners know when you have memorised an answer!
Instead of memorising answers for Part 1, practise giving spontaneous answers to questions about yourself, eg studies, hobbies and culture.
Focus on understanding and answering the specific question, rather than giving an answer that is very general.
Additional tips :
If you don』t understand a question, ask the examiner to repeat it, 『I』m sorry, could you say that again?』
If you don』t understand the meaning of a work, ask the examiner, eg 『I』m sorry, what does … mean?』
Speaking tip 5: It"s your performance .
Part 2 of the Speaking test is a two-minute uninterrupted talk. This is your chance to perform and show off your English!
You have one minute to prepare your two-minute talk, and will receive a pencil and paper to make notes. These will help you give a well-organised talk.
Follow the prompts on the card the examiner gives you. They will help you give a clear, complete talk.
Additional tips :
You will not be penalised if you don』t answer all the questions on the card. They are there to help guide your talk.
Don』t worry about watching the time - the examiner will tell you when to finish.
While you are studying for the test, practise speaking on different topics for one to two minutes.
Speaking tip 6: Clarify the meaning of the question
Part 3 of the Speaking test is the most challenging. It is important that you understand the questions.
If you don』t understand a question, clarify it with the examiner in a positive way, e.g. 『So are you asking….?』 rather than, 『I don』t understand.』
Additional tip : Answering the question
Extend your answers by giving opinions, reasons, examples and explanations.
Use a wide range of sentence structures, grammar and vocabulary.
