腸癌早期癥狀不明顯
腸癌的癥狀在早期時多不典型，不容易引起患者的注意。
結腸癌：早期可有腹脹不適，消化不良，腹部隱痛，大便習慣改變（右半結腸癌多表現為糞便稀薄、有膿血、排便次數增多；左半結腸癌多表現為排便困難），大便隱血陽性等。
直腸癌：出現大便帶血、膿血便、里急後重、便秘、腹瀉、大便變細或形狀發生改變等，多提示直腸癌的可能。
大腸癌高危人群自測
對無大腸癌遺傳性家族史且年齡≥40歲、具有以下一項者可視為結直腸癌的高危人群並行定期檢查：糞便隱血試驗陽性；一級親屬（父母、兄弟姐妹）曾患大腸癌；本人有癌症史或腸息肉史；具備慢性便秘、慢性腹瀉、粘液血便、慢性結腸炎或慢性闌尾炎史中的兩項及兩項以上者。
對有家族性腺瘤性息肉病（FAP）或遺傳性非息肉病性結直腸癌（HNPCC）這兩種遺傳性大腸癌患者或家族成員，患大腸癌的風險明顯增高，特別是患有FAP者如不治療，幾乎所有患者在40歲以前均會發生惡變，所以更應定期體檢和隨訪。
無癥狀也應考慮腸鏡
由於大腸癌早期多無癥狀或癥狀不典型，不易被大家重視；而一旦有了癥狀查出時多已偏晚。所以對於上述高危人群，即使沒有癥狀，也應該考慮做腸鏡檢查。
