Our first aim was to learn from the formality of the Great Wall. We were attracted to the fact that the Great Wall has never been an isolated object. It running almost endlessly along the undulating ridgeline(起伏的山脊線) without being isolated from the surrounding environment. That appealed to us as a criticism toward the conventional form of "architecture』 that tends to seek to be an isolated object among the environment.

With this project,a guesthouse located close to the Great Wall, Kuma intended to reinterpret(重新解釋) traditional qualities of Chinese architecture through the use of bamboo as both structural and non-structural element. The architect was intrigued by(著迷於) the characteristics of this material: as opposed to(與...形成對照) other wood products, which are all processed in one way or another before they are used in as building materials, bamboo can only be used in its original form and is thus both a material and a product at the same time.

Kuma"s design, in which he applies his usual method of "particlization," especially emphasizes the disposition of bamboo as material. Positioning the individual pieces of the wood so as to resemble bamboo in its natural environment, Kuma seems to reveal the true essence of this material in his design.

Interior Views ofBamboo LoungeThe guesthouse"s close proximity to the Great Wall was another important element in the design. The wall seems to run virtually endlessly along the undulating ridgeline(起伏的山脊線) of the mountainous landscape without being disconnected from its surrounding environment. Kuma wanted to endow(賦予) his project, which he deliberately(有意的) called a "wall" instead of a "house," with the same quality.

Section

Bamboo is applied extensively(廣泛的) throughout the house to shape boundaries in the form of light screens, but the heart of the design is a lounge at the center of the building. light screens 光簾Lounge 休息室

Interior Views of Bamboo LoungeServing as a small tearoom, this space, made up almost entirely of bamboo, is set in a shallow reflecting pool. It is reached by 2 stepping stones that form a small bridge and is open to the south toward the Great Wall, which is visible from this site.

A glass canopy shelters the lounge, while the use of bamboo beneath the glass and elsewhere filters(過濾) in light and provides the space with an ephemeral quality that makes the experience of this architecture especially memorable.glass canopy 玻璃天幕註: ephemeral本意指朝生暮死。
