說起來，一百年來，中國女人中有一個名字十分響亮的群體，那就是「名媛」。那麼，什麼樣的女人才能冠以「媛」呢？《爾雅》中解釋說：「媛」是美女，「媛」就是有美好品德的女子。後來有人引申說儀態萬方、風情萬種的女人就是「媛」。而擁有沉魚落雁、閉月羞花之容貌的那便是「名媛」。

到了二十世紀二三十年代，老上海的「名媛」是專門為形容一種象牙塔尖上的女人，這樣的女人，單單一個「名門閨秀」仍不足表示她們的紆貴，她們是淑女中的淑女，名女中的名女。她們既有所謂血統純真的高貴家族，更有全面的後天中西文化調理：她們都持有著名女子學校的文憑，家庭的名師中既有前朝的遺老遺少舉人學士，也有舉止優雅的英國或俄國沒落貴族的夫人；她們講英文，又讀詩詞；學跳舞鋼琴，又習京崑山水畫；她們動可以飛車騎馬打網球玩女子棒球甚至開飛機……靜可以舞文弄墨彈琴練瑜珈……

她們的閨中密友可能是李鴻章的孫女、美國第一夫人的妹妹，她們的母親可能陪過日前剛過世的英國百歲瑪麗皇太后飲下午茶，她們的母親們纏過了放開的，塞著棉花的半殘廢的勉強塞進高跟鞋的文明腳，踩起華爾茲步來一點也不含糊。或者就因為母親那一代的腳上的遺憾，名媛們從小就被送去白俄的芭蕾培訓班……

雖然，當時的名媛不一定是美女，但自有這等「天上人間」的氣派來烘托；就算不漂亮，但一定有氣質。名媛在性事上也是惜身如玉冷處理，故而名媛中也頗多怨婦，她們通常會被丈夫譏笑為「木美人」。就這樣，「名媛」一個「媛」字，已經把女人的典雅秀嫻，風華儀采，都彙集在方寸之間。所謂「行走時香風細細，坐下時掩然百媚」的袂袂倩影正是當時名媛生動形象的寫照。

那麼，什麼樣的女人才能成為名動一時的名妓呢？名妓本質上也是靠出賣肉體為生的妓女，只不過妓藝高超，達到了爐火純青、遊刃有餘的地步。名妓首先必須是天生麗質，裊娜娉婷、楚楚依人，沉魚落雁，閉月羞花，一笑傾人城，二笑傾人國；名妓還要身手不凡，既會琴棋詩畫，又能長袖善舞，還要知書達理，經常上得了「花榜」，成為名動一時的花魁。當然，最有名妓還要上得了龍床，出得了廳堂，進得了書房。譬如唐朝的江南美女杜秋娘和北宋時京城名妓李師師。

中國歷史上可以說是名妓輩出，譬如蘇小小、霍小玉、柳如是、章台柳、杜十娘、李香君、董小宛、陳圓圓、賽金花等等。這其中不乏善良正直、憂國憂民的青樓名妓。舊時代婦女的命運不由自己掌握，墜入青樓多為生活、命運所逼。但她們之中也有人良心未泯，利用自己的特殊身份干出驚天動地的大事的。譬如民國初年京都名妓小鳳仙。

看起來，名媛和名妓身份不同，但是，他們都是時代聚光燈下生活的女人。時代聚光燈不僅投射在她們的音容笑貌和言行舉止上，而且還要聚焦她們妝容、衣著、性格、愛好。因此，在那個名媛與名妓輩出的時代，看到她們的美，就能讀出那個時代的精神氣質和那個年代的審美能力。
