He finally managed to track down the book he wanted.

I finally managed to track him down in Manchester.

track down=to find something or someone after looking for it, him, or her in a lot of different places

track這個詞有很多意思, 做名詞時它可以指學校里我們跑圈的那個操場, 可以指火車的軌道, 可以指一張音樂CD上的一首歌(我想其實就是CD上的一個軌道吧)

你看它有這麼多不同的意思, 但其實都歸結到一點: 軌跡, 軌道. 所以track做動詞就表示沿著別人的軌跡去追蹤

注意上邊2個例句中track down the book, 是把book放到後邊

而track him down, 則是把him放到中間

你注意到這點了嗎? 這和我們之前講的there he is vs there』s smoke是一個道理

當是代詞的時候, 就放中間; 是名詞的時候, 就放後邊.

當你在不同語境下, 多留意, 多見幾次, 慢慢你就跟它混熟了

有童鞋說: 查字典發現infant是可數, 為什麼這裡不是tracking down a helpless infant呢?

我去查了一下詞典, 確實是可數

我再去聽原聲, 我的耳朵卻傾向於沒有a的

但語法上我傾向於有a

那我還是聽語法的, 我認為這一句應該有a

至於耳朵無法接受, 那我也沒辦法
