去國外工作鍍金?這已經是過去式了。

今年早些時候,我做了一個演講,主題是如何在海外追求一份國際事業和如何在美國找到好工作,現場大概有50位職場人。在我的演講中,我分享了一個觀點,我認為是大部分人並沒有期待聽到的一個觀點。為什麼?這很值得思考。
我告訴他們,在我看來,作為一個長期從事招聘和人才行業的專業人士,我認為在美國找工作對大多數人來說,不再是最好的選擇。事實上,我可以想得到,在中國有很多更好的就業機會,比在美國找工作更容易、更有利,成本更低廉。而且還能讓你在未來更有競爭力,作為一名擁有國際素質的職場人。
情況就是這麼個情況。與中國能提供的機會相比,在海外工作已不再是一個明顯的優勢。我會這麼說,主要有以下三個原因:
比以前更小的差距和優勢——是的,在不久之前,美國在商業、技術和管理的各個領域遠遠領先於中國。美國是一個發達的經濟體。而中國不是。所以以前,中國需要學習的大部分東西都來自國外。
但今時不同往日。美國和中國之間的市場和商業環境之間的差距已經大大縮小。現在,越來越多的本土公司的專業水平越來越有國際水準。甚至有一些領域是中國在引領全世界。這個國家的一些技術基礎設施和商業渠道令人驚嘆!而且在許多方面遠遠領先於美國和其他國家。比如說微信、支付寶和摩拜單車,這只是一小部分例子。許多人會說,這只是冰山一角,中國正在引領世界。
中國有更吸引人的機會——我一直告訴大家一個關於事業成功的一基本事實:「如果你的平台有局限性,那麼這些也將是你實現你所追求的成功的限制。」美國經濟已經成熟。它比中國的經濟增長要慢得多,也更保守。我想說的是,你能說美國哪些行業是「欣欣向榮「的么,更不用說穩步成長的行業,你馬上能想到哪些?
那中國呢?互聯網、保健、運動休閑、旅遊、娛樂、餐飲服務、教育和人才發展、財富管理和商業服務,這些都是我馬上想到的一些行業。它們不只是在發展,而是在蓬勃發展。中國從製造業向消費和服務驅動型經濟的積極轉變,正為許多大型行業創造一個不可思議的成長和機遇期。
人們常說,在互聯網行業工作一年相當於在傳統行業工作2-3年。互聯網行業的增長速度快得多,而且比其他行業更具活力。所以你會經歷更多,並且成長得更快。
你可以對中國和美國說同樣的話。在中國工作一年相當於在更成熟的,經濟增長也更緩慢的經濟體(如美國)工作2-3年.所以,為了你的職業發展,在這裡,因為相同的時間內,你會經歷更多,成長更快。
在中國,你的一切都更有價值!——在一個更好的成長和機會市場上,還有哪個市場能更充分發揮你的能力,開發你的潛力?在美國,你不如在那裡長大的人了解市場和用戶的習慣。你的英語能力也會給你帶來限制。大多數情況下,老闆只會讓你做一個技術、分析和業務操作類的工作。如果這就是你想做的,那很好。但是,如果你想做管理和領導、業務發展或戰略方面的角色,很難。
但在這裡,有越來越多的機會能讓你充分發揮你的價值,以及你所能做的。不僅很多跨國公司會認可你,充分利用你的中國背景和國際經歷,給你機會,而且越來越多的中國公司也會這樣。在阿里巴巴和騰訊的帶領下,這些公司渴望成為全球玩家。而且他們會成為!
時代變了
我理解許多人想在國外工作和生活是有個人原因的。我不打算講這些,我只是從職業發展和事業成功的角度來說。我只是想說明,儘管過去大家很渴望追求國外的工作經驗和機會,但在今天,這樣做的好處已經大不如從前。
我不是說擁有海外的工作經驗就不值得。如果你能得到一個在國外工作的好機會,那你就去。這對你的職業生涯肯定是有好處的。我只是說,跟過去不同的是,這不再是一個終極的職業發展趨勢。這不再是成功的關鍵因素,也不再是成為一個國際水準的職場人的關鍵因素。
作為一個人才行業的專業人士,我在這個市場上看到了許多人,他們比很多美國人積極、主動、大膽、有能力,這是因為他們在一個更具創新性和快速變化,同時也越來越專業化和國際化的市場中工作。他們每天面對的更具挑戰性的情況迫使他們成長和學習競爭。相信我,我在這裡遇到了很多雖然從未在國外工作過,但卻令人欽佩的人。而且,他們不僅僅在本土是人才,甚至可以與來自世界其他各地的優秀人才相提並論。

Is Working Overseas The Ultimate Move For Your Career Anymore?
Earlier this year, I delivered a talk to about 50 professionals on, How To Pursue An International Career And Capture Good Job Opportunities In The United States. During my talk, I shared a different perspective than what I believe most were expecting to hear. It』s one that』s worth thinking about.
I told them that from my point of view as a long-time, recruitment and talent industry professional, I don』t think that pursuing a job overseas, like in the U.S. is the best move for most people anymore. In fact, I can think of many better employment situations here in China that are much more attainable, beneficial, and less costly than working in overseas. And that will also allow you to compete more successfully as a global-caliber professional in the future.
Yes, that』s right! Working overseas is no longer provides a clear advantage compared to what many opportunities here in China can offer you. Here are my three main reasons for saying this:
Much smaller gaps and advantages than before – For instance, not long ago, the U.S. was far, far ahead of China in every area of business, technology, and management. The U.S. was a developed economy. China was not. So in the past, most of the things that China needed to learn came from abroad.
But the same cannot be said today. The gap between the U.S. and China market and business environments has closed considerably. Today, the professional level of more and more companies here is increasingly international-caliber. There are even areas where China』s innovation is leading the world. Some of this country』s technology infrastructure and business channels are amazing! And far ahead of what exists in the U.S. and other countries in many instances. You can look at WeChat, Alipay, and Mobike as great examples, to name just a few. Many would say that it』s just the tip of the iceberg with regards to areas that China is on its way to leading the world.
More attractive opportunities here now - A fundamental truth I always tell people about career success is, 「If your platform has limitations, then these will be your limitations too for achieving the success you seek.」 Again, as an example, U.S. economy is mature. It』s much slower growth and more conservative than China』s economy. I mean, what industries in the U.S. can you say are 「booming,」 let alone growing steadily? Can you readily think of any?
Now, how about in China? Well, the internet, health & fitness, sports & leisure, travel, entertainment, dining & food services, education & talent development, wealth management, and business services are just a few major industries that immediately come to my mind. And they』re not just growing. They are booming. China』s aggressive shift from a manufacturing to a consumer and services-driven economy is creating a fantastic time of growth and opportunity in many huge sectors.
It』s often said that one year working in the internet industry is the equivalent of 2-3 years working in traditional industries. The internet industry is much faster growth and just so much more dynamic than other industries. So you experience much more and grow much faster too.
You can say the exact same thing about China and the U.S. One year working in China is the equivalent of 2-3 years working in much more mature, slower growth economies, like the U.S. So for your career development, you experience much more and grow much faster over the same amount of time here.
Everything about you is more fully valued here! – On top of a much better market of growth and opportunities, which market can more fully leverage your capabilities and develop your potential? If you were to work in the U.S., you don』t know the market and user habits like people who grew up there. And your English skills create limitations for you. For the most part, employers there will only consider you for technical, analytical, and operations roles. That』s fine if that』s all you want to do. But it』s very difficult if you want to be considered for management and leadership, business development, or strategic roles.
But here, there are a growing number of situations that will fully value what you are, and what you can do. It』s not only the many multinationals that will recognize and give you chances to utilize both your Chinese background and international training, but more and more Chinese companies as well. Led by Alibaba and Tencent, these companies aspire to become global players. And they will!
Times have changed
Yes, I understand the many personal reasons that many people here want to work and live abroad. I』m not going to get into these. I』m just speaking from a career development and career success perspective. I』m just trying to make the point that while pursuing work experience and opportunities abroad used to be highly desired, the benefits and advantages of doing this today are not nearly as clear.
I』m not saying that gaining overseas work experience is not worthwhile. If you can get a good opportunity to work abroad, then then do it. Of course, this will benefit your career. I』m only saying that working overseas is not the ultimate career development move that it used to be. And it』s no longer a key success factor for achieving outstanding success or for becoming a global-caliber professional.
As a talent industry professional, I see many people in this market that are more proactive, self-driven, bold, and capable than many people from other developed countries and mature economies. It』s because they work in a market that』s more innovative and fast-changing, as well as increasingly professional and international-caliber. The more challenging situations they face every day forces them to grow and learn to compete.
Believe me, I』ve met enough impressive people here who have never worked abroad. And they』re not just impressive as a local talent. But also compared to other impressive global talents from around the world. So don』t overlook this historical, amazing time of growth and opportunities in your own backyard. More and more so, it』s a fantastic place to be for your career development and future success.
