研英翻譯技巧：如何處理重複句

一、重複名詞

（一）重複英語中作賓語的名詞

Students must be cultivated to have the ability to analyze and solve problems.

必須培養學生分析問題和解決問題的能力。

They would be very reluctant to postpone or cancel the meeting.

他們不太願意推遲這個會議或者取消這個會議。

（二）重複英語中作表語的名詞A

This has been our position—but not theirs.

這一直是我們的立場——而不是他們的立場。

John is your friend as much as he is mine.

約翰既是你的朋友，又是我的朋友。

（三）重複英語介詞前所省略的名詞

英語中常重複使用介詞，而將第二個、第三個介詞前的名詞省略，翻譯時則往往可以重複這些省略的名詞。

The doctor will get more practice out of me than out of seventeen hundred ordinary patients.

醫生從我身上得到的實踐，地比從一千七百個普通病人身上得到的實踐還多。

（四）重複定語從句中作先行詞的名詞

英語定語從句常用關係詞引導，它一方面代表定語從句所修飾的那個先行詞（通常是名詞、名詞短語或代詞），一方面在從句中擔任一個成分。漢語中沒有關係詞，往往需要重複這個作先行詞的名詞。

He gave ma a book which I kept to this day.

他曾經送給我一本書。這本書我一直保存至今。

Yesterday afternoon, I met an old friend of mine, who said that he would go abroad the next week.

昨天下午，我遇到了一位老朋友。這位老朋友告訴我說他下個星期要出國去。

二、重複動詞

（一）英語句子常用一個動詞連接幾個賓語或表語，在譯文中往往要重複這個動詞。

Is he a friend or an enemy?

他是個朋友呢，還是個敵人？

You can do that work very well if you care to.

如果你肯做那項工作，你就能做得更很好。

（二）英語句子中動詞後有介詞時，在第二次或者第三次往往只用介詞而省略動詞，在漢語譯文中則要重複動詞以代替英語中重複的前置詞。

We talked of ourselves, of our prospects, of the journey, of the weather, of each other—of everything.

我們談到自己，談到前途，談到旅程，談到天氣，談到彼此的情況——談到所有的一切事情。

有時候，在英語中連動詞後面的介詞也省略了，但譯文中仍可以重複動詞。

They wanted to determine if he complied with the terms of his employment and his obligations as an American.他們想要確定，他是否履行了受雇條件，是否履行了作為美國公民所應盡的職責。
