Please introduce yourself | Tell me something about yourselfMost interviews start off with this seemingly innocent question but what most interviewees don"t understand is that this is one of the critical questions that will convince the interviewer that you are the right person for the job. It will determine the course and the length of your conversation with the hiring manager and it is your best chance to create the perfect "first impression." However, a great number of experienced HR Managers and Recruiters in Korea say that 80% of the candidate"s answer would either be a long version of the applicant"s resume or a recap of personal history. How to come up with the best introduction of yourself I always remind candidates that the key to a successful interview is matching your profile with that of the needs of the employers. In order to come up with the best answer you should uncover what your interviewer"s greatest needs or goals for the position you are applying for and customize your answer to directly answer those needs. To do this, follow these two simple steps: 1. Do your homework. It is important that you understand what the needs of the overall industry, the company and the job requires. You can get a lot of information from the job description that the hiring manager has provided you in terms of the functional scope, and the character of the person they would wish to hire. 2. Understand their expectations. The hiring process is all about expectations and as such it would be also helpful if you talk with the hiring manager prior to your interview so that you can understand what the job entails and what type of performance they expect should you get hired. You can say, "I have quite a number of past accomplishments and technical skills that is fit for this position. But as much as possible I would want to make the best use of the interview time. Would you be able to give me more details as to the priorities or expectations for this job? Right now, all I know is _____." Now that you know what the needs of the employers are, it is time for you to describe why you are fit for the job by providing parallels to the role you have performed in your current or previous company. Give specific examples of your major role and highlight the achievements that you acquired. Take a look at the following examples of self-introduction of a candidate applying for the position of Research Analyst at a global investment firm and see how it is transformed using the strategies I have mentioned. Candidate"s original answer:
I"m (name deleted) and I"m currently working at PWC"s Korea office. I graduated at Seoul National University with a degree in Business Administration. Now I"m working as an associate consultant at the financial advisory department. I"m applying for this job because I heard that your company is growing in South Korea and I think this is a good chance for me to develop my career. Revised answer: First of all, thank you for giving me this opportunity to discuss my qualifications in connection with my application for the position of Research Analyst. I』ve heard much good things about your company from my research and from my friends that used to work here. My research shows that your company is fast growing in South Korea because your strategy is to enter markets which you feel confident that you can add the most value. I believe that I am suitable for this position because I have prior experience in research and in critically analyzing market and company information in the commodities sector. My current role at PWC"s Korea office covers auditing company and industry data and statistics, assisting in writing publications that are presented to the client, build financial models and handle our client』s request for information regarding their business investments. Aside from this, I possess a strong background in accounting and have very good analytical and communication skills which allow me to interact with stakeholders with great efficiency. I respond quite well under pressure and am willing to go the extra mile to accomplish team goals. And as such, I am very confident that I match your current requirements.
