茅利塔尼亞一望無垠的沙漠里，埋藏著一個公開的秘密：全國10%到20%的人口遭到奴役。也就是說，大概有34萬到68萬人是奴隸。

穆赫爾是一個經歷坎坷的女奴。解救她的，是一位曾經的奴隸主。

眼神渾濁、雙手乾枯的穆赫爾·明特·雅爾巴40多歲了，從一出生就是奴隸。

講述自己的故事時，穆赫爾的手顫抖得非常厲害。

她強忍著悲痛，請求給女兒一個葬禮，換來的是奴隸主的呵斥：「幹活去！」

穆赫爾出生在茅利塔尼亞北部沙漠，從來不知道母親是誰，也不知道父親是誰。自孩童時期起，穆赫爾每天早早地起床，做飯，洗衣，然後放羊和駱駝，一直忙碌到深夜，從未得到報酬。她和駱駝在一起的時間比和人在一起的時間長。「我就像和動物在一起的動物。」

一天放羊回來，穆赫爾發現，自己還不會爬的女嬰躺在門外，兩眼睜著，臉上爬滿了螞蟻。看到女兒失去了生命，穆赫爾頓時癱坐在地上抽泣起來。

奴隸主告訴穆赫爾，讓女嬰死去是為了懲罰穆赫爾工作不力，她不必背著孩子幹活，工作效率更高。

穆赫爾強忍著悲痛，請求給女兒一個葬禮，換來的是奴隸主的呵斥：「幹活去！」

這位奴隸主是女嬰的生父，他曾多次強暴穆赫爾。

穆赫爾回憶說：「我們挖了一個淺淺的墳墓，將她埋了。我為我的女兒以及我的處境哭了很久。我如果不閉嘴，他們會讓我處境更糟，這種處境會讓我根本無法承受。」

去年12月，在茅利塔尼亞首都努瓦克肖特，她將自己的遭遇告訴前來採訪的CNN記者。CNN僱用的安全人員站在門口放哨，以防止政府代表尾隨而來。CNN的報道說，在該國不得談論奴隸制，這個問題是如此敏感，以至於採訪幾乎都是秘密進行的。

穆赫爾要求報道公布她的真名和照片。「我不怕任何人。」她說，自己之所以有勇氣公開露面，是希望她的奴隸主受到懲罰。
