阿彌陀佛四十八願-The?Forty-Eight?Vows?by?Amitabha?Buddha

第一願：國中無三惡道願：設我得佛，國有地獄＼餓鬼＼畜生者，不取正覺．

The vow to eliminate the three evil realms:If,when I attainBuddhahood,there should be in my land a hell,a realm of hungryspirits or a realm of animals,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第二願：復更不生惡道願：設我得佛，國中天人壽終之後，復更三惡道者，不取正覺．

The vow of no more births in the three evil realms:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should afterthis life fall again into the three evil realms,may I not attainperfect Enlightenment.

第三願：各得真金色身願：設我得佛，國中天人不悉真金色者，不取正覺．

The vow of everybody possessing the same color of puregold:If,when I attain Buddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my landshould not be in the color of pure gold,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第四願：形色無有好醜願：設我得佛，國中天人形色不同有好醜者，不取正覺．

The vow of everybody acquring the same appearance of nodifference in beauty:If,when I attain Buddhahood,all the heavenlybeings in my land should not all be of one appearance with nodifference in beauty,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第五願：生者皆得宿命通願：設我得佛，國中天人不識宿命，下至知百千億那由他諸劫事者，不取正覺．

The vow of recollecting the previous lives:If,when I attainBuddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should not rememberall their previous lives,not knowing at least the events occurredduring the previous hundred thousand of nayutas of kotis ofkalpas,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第六願：皆得天眼徹視願：設我得佛，國中天人不得天眼，下至見百千億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺．

The vow of possessing the devine eye:If,when I attainBuddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should not possessthe devine eye of seeing at least a hundred thousand nayutas ofkotis of Buddha-lands,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第七願：皆得天耳徹聽願：設我得佛，國中天人不得天耳，下至聞百千億那由他諸佛所說，不悉受持者，不取正覺．

The vow of possessing the devine ear:If,when I attainBuddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should not possessthe devine ear of hearing the teachings of at least a hundredthousand nayutas of kotis of Buddhas and should not remember andabide by all of them,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第八願：皆得知他心念願：設我得佛，國中天人不得見他心智，下至百千億那由他諸佛國中眾生心念者，不取正覺。

The vow of possessing the faculty of reading other"sminds:If,when I attain Buddhahood,all the havenly beings in my landshould not possess the faculty of reading other"s minds,at leastthose of all sentient beings in a hundred thousand nayutas of kotisof Buddha-lands,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第九願：皆得神足飛行願：設我得佛，國中天人不得神足，於一念頃，下至不能超過百千億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺．

The vow of possessing the devine feet:If,when I attainBuddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should not possessthe devine feet that enable them to,in one instant,travel at leastbeyond a hundred thousand nayutas of kotis of Buddha-lands,may Inot attain perfect Englightenment.

第十願：不起貪計身見願：設我得佛，國中天人若起想念貪計身者，不取正覺．

The vow of not forming the idea of self attachment:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should giverise to thoughts of self-attachment,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第十一願：正定必至涅磐願：設我得佛，國中天人不住定聚必至滅度者，不取正覺。

The vow of being firmly established in the Absolute Truth andultimately reaching Mahaparinirvana:If,when I attain Buddhahood,allthe heavenly beings in my land should not dwell in DefinitelyAssured State of Absolute Truth and unfailingly reachMahaparinirvana,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第十二願：光明遍照十方願：設我得佛，光明有能限明，下至不照百千億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺．

The vow of illuminating the ten quarters:If,when I attainBuddhahood,may light should be limited,unable to illuminate atleast a hundred thousand nayutas of kotis of Buddha-lands,may I notattain perfect Enlightenment.

第十三願：壽同佛永久願：設我得佛，壽命有能限量，下至百千億那由他劫者，不取正覺．

The vow of having endless life:If,when I attain Buddhahood,mylife-span should be limited,even to the extent of a hundredthousand nayutas of kotis of kalpas,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第十四願：聲聞廣多無量願：設我得佛，國中聲聞有能計量，乃至三千大千世界眾生悉成緣覺，於百千劫悉共計較，知其數者，不取正覺．

The vow of having numerous shravakas:If,when I attainBuddhahood,the number of shravakas in my land could be even countedtogether by all the beings in the three millions of spheres ofworlds after becoming pratyekabuddhas during a hundred thousandkalpas,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第十五願：壽命修短隨意願：設我得佛，國中天人壽命無有限量，除其本願修短自在，若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of having a life span at one"s own wish:If,when I attainBuddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should have limitedlife-spans,except when they wish to shorten them in accordance withtheir original vows,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第十六願：國中無不善名願：設我得佛：國中天人，乃至聞有不善名者，不取正覺．

The vow of not hearing the name of wrongdoing:If,when I attainBuddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should even hear hename of sin,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第十七願：諸佛稱名讚歎願：設我得佛，十方世界無量諸佛，不悉咨嗟稱我名者，不取正覺．

The vow of all Buddhas preaching my fame and proclaiming mypraise:If,when I attain Buddhahood,innumerable Buddhas in the landsof the ten quarters should not all praise and glorify My Nametogether,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第十八願：十念皆生我國願：設我得佛，十方眾生，至死信樂，欲生我國，乃至十念，若不生者，不取正覺．唯除五逆，誹謗正法．

The vow of ensuring all sentient beings to be born in the Buddhacountry of mine after saying ten prayers to My Name:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,sentient beings in the lands of the ten quarterswho entrust themselves to me with absolute faith and joy,desire tobe born in my land,and pray to My Name,even for just tentimes,should not be born there,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.Excluded,however,are those who commit the fivegravest offences and abuse the right Dharma.

第十九願：勤修我皆接引願：設我得佛，十方眾生，發菩提心，修諸功德，至心發願，欲生我國，臨壽終時，假令不與大眾圍繞現其人前者，不取正覺．

The vow of guiding all,at their dying bed,who have earnestlypracticed the Dharma:If,when I attain Buddhahood,sentient beings inthe lands of the ten quarters,who awaken aspiration forEnlightenment,do various meritorious deeds and wholeheartedlydesire to be born in my land,should not,at the end of their presentlives,see me appear before them surrounded by a multitude ofsages,may I not attain perfect Enlightment.

第二十願：繫念必得往生願：設我得佛，眾生聞我名號，繫念我國，植眾德本，至心迴向，欲生我國，不果遂者，不取正覺．

The vow of receiving all those who have the focused desire to beborn in my Buddha-land:If,when I attain Buddhahood,sentient beingsin the lands of the ten quarters who,having heard MyName,concentrate their thoughts on my land,plant roots ofvirtue,and most sincerely direct their merits my land with a desireto be born there,should not eventually fulfill their aspiration,mayI not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第二十一願：各具三十二相願：設我得佛，國中天人，不悉成滿三十二大人相者，不取正覺．

The vow of having the 32 physical characteristics of a GreatSaint:If,when I attain Buddhahood,all the heavenly beings in myland should not all be endowed with the thirty-two physicalcharacteristics of a Great Saint,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第二十二願：菩薩一生補處願：設我得佛，他方佛土諸菩薩眾，來生我國，究竟必至一生補處；除其本願自在所化，為眾生故，被弘誓鎧，積累德本，度脫一切，游諸佛國，修菩薩行，供養十方諸佛如來，開化恆沙無量眾生，使立無上正真之道，超出常倫諸地之行，現前修習普賢之德，若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of reaching Buddhahood after one more life:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,bodhisattvas in the Buddha-lands of otherquarters who are born in my land should not ultimately andunfailingly reach the Stage of Becoming a Buddha after One MoreLife,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.Excepted are those whowish to teach and guide sentient beings to honor their originalvows.For they wear the armor of great vows,accumulatemerits,deliver all beings from birth-and-death,visit Buddha-landsto perform the bodhisattva practices,make offerings toBuddhas,Tathagatas throughout the ten quarters,enlightenuncountable sentient beings as numerous as the sands of the RiverGanges,and establish them in the right practice for thehighest,perfect enlightenment.Such bodhisattvas transcend thecourse of practice of the ordinary bodhisattvas,manifest thepractices of all the bodhisattva stages,and cultivate the virtuesof Samantabhadra.

第二十三願：一時普供諸佛願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，乘佛神力，供養諸佛，一食之頃，不能遍至無量無數億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺．

The vow of simultaneously making offerings to allBuddhas:If,when I attain Buddhahood,bodhisattvas in my land,inorder to make offerings to Buddhas through my transcendentpower,should not be able to reach immeasurable and innumerablenayutas of kotis of Buddha-lands in as short a time as a morningmeal,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第二十四願：供具自皆如意願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，在諸佛前，現其德本，諸所求欲供養之具，若不如意者，不取正覺．

The vow of providing the offerings of one"s own choice:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,bodhisattvas in my land should not,as theywish,be able to perform meritorious acts of worshipping the Buddhaswith the offerings of their own choices,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第二十五願：菩薩演一切智願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，不能演說一切智者，不取正覺．

The vow of bodhisattvas lecturing with the all-knowingwisdom:If,when I attain Buddhahood,bodhisattvas in my land shouldnot be able to expound the Dharma with the all-knowing wisdom,may Inot attain perfect Enlightenment.

第二十六願：菩薩得金剛身願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，不得金剛那羅延身者，不取正覺．

The vow of bodhisattvas having the body of the Vajra-godNarayana:If,when I attain Buddhahood,there should be anybodhisattva in my land not endowed with the body of Vajra-godNarayana,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第二十七願：萬物悉皆殊特願：設我得佛，國中天人，一切萬物，嚴凈光麗，形色殊特，窮微極妙，無能稱量．其諸眾生，乃至逮得天眼，有能明了辨其名數者，不取正覺．

The vow of everything being sublime:If,when I attainBuddhahood,sentient beings should,even with the divine eye,be ableto distinguish by name,articulate by number all the myriads ofmanifestations provided for the heavenly beings and all otherthings in my land,which are glorious and resplendent and haveexquisite details beyond description,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第二十八願：菩薩道樹普見願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，乃至少功德者，不能知見道場樹無量光色四百萬里者，不取正覺。

The vow of all seeing the Bodhi-Tree:If,when I attainBuddhahood,bodhisattvas in my land,even those with very littlestock of merit,should not be able to see the Bodhi-tree ofcountless colors and of four million li in height,may I not attainperfect Enlightenment.

第二十九願：受經普得智辯願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，若受讀經法，諷誦持說，而不得辯才智慧者，不取正覺．

The vow of all having eloquence and wisdom in preaching thesutras:If,when I attain Buddhahood,bodhisattvas in my land shouldnot acquire eloquence and wisdom in upholding sutras and recitingand expounding and practicing them,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第三十願：智辯無有限量願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，智慧辯才，若可限量者，不取正覺．

The vow of having unlimited wisdom and eloquence:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,the wisdom and eloquence of bodhisattvas in myland should be limited,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第三十一願：凈國照見十方願：設我得佛，國土清凈，皆悉照見十方一切無量無數不可思議諸佛世界，猶如明鏡，睹其面像，若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of my pure Buddha-land revealing the tenquarters:if,when I attain Buddhahood,my land should not beresplendent,revealing in its light all the immeasurable,innumerableand inconceivable Buddha-lands in the ten quarters,like images in aclear mirror,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第三十二願：嚴飾超諸天人願：設我得佛，自地以上，至於虛空，宮殿樓觀，池流華樹，國中所有一切萬物，皆以無量雜寶百千種香而合成．嚴飾奇妙，超諸天人．其香普熏十方世界，菩薩聞者，皆修佛行．若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of having supreme manifestations superior to those ofall gods:If,when I attain Buddhahood,all the myriads ofmanifestations in my land,from the ground to the sky,such aspalaces,pavilions,ponds,streams and trees,should not be composed ofboth countless treasures,which surpass in supreme excellenceanything in the worlds of the gods,and of a hundred thousand kindsof incense,whose fragrance pervades all the worlds of the tenquarters,causing all bodhisattvas who sense it to perform Buddhistpractices,then may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第三十三願：蒙光觸身蒙益願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界眾生之類，蒙我光明觸其體者，身心柔軟，超過天人．若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of enjoying peace and joy when touched by mylight:If,when I attain Buddhahood,sentient beings in immeasurableand inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten quarters,who are touchedby my light,should not feel peace and happiness in their bodies andminds surpassing those of the gods,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第三十四願：皆得法忍總持願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界眾生之類，聞我名字，不得菩薩無生法忍，諸深總持者，不取正覺．

The vow of acquiring the Bodhisattva"s insight into thenon-arising of all Dharmas and obtaining various profoundDharanis:If,when I attain Buddhahood,sentient beings inimmeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten quarters,whohave heard My Name,should not gain the bodhisattva"s insight intothe non-arising of all Dharmas and should not acquire variousprofound Dharnais,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第三十五願：信樂永離女身願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界，其有女人聞我名字，歡喜信樂，發菩提心，厭惡女身，壽終之後，復為女像者，不取正覺．

The vow of no more births as women at their own wishes out offaith and joy in My Name:if,when I attain Buddhahood,women inimmeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten quarterswho,having heard My Name,rejoice in faith,awaken aspiration forEnlightenment and wish to renounce womanhood,should after deathreborn as women,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第三十六願：常修梵行成佛願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界菩薩眾，聞我名字，壽終之後，常修梵行，至成佛道．若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of practicing Buddhism till Buddhahood:If,when I attainBuddhahood,bodhisattvas in immeasurable and inconceivableBuddha-lands of the ten quarters,who,having heard My Name,shouldnot,after ending their present lives,go on performing Buddhistpractices until reaching Buddhahood,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第三十七願：歸依感動天人願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界諸天人民，聞我名字，五體投地，嵇首作禮，歡喜信樂，修菩薩行．諸天世人，莫不致敬．若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of gods and humans being converted to me and touchingall gods and people:If,when I attain Buddhahood,humans and gods inimmeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the tenquarters,who,having heard My Name,should not prostrate themselveson the ground to revere and worship me,rejoice in faith,performbodhisattva practices,and be respected by all gods and people ofall the worlds,may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

第三十八願：妙服自然在身願：設我得佛，國中天人，欲得衣服，隨念即至。如佛所贊應法妙服，自然在身，有求裁縫搗染浣濯者，不取正覺。

The vow of wearing beautiful dress as one wishes:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,all the heavenly beings in my land should notobtain clothing the moment the idea arises,and if the fine robes asprescribed and praised bye the Buddhas should not be spontaneouslyprovided for them,and if these clothes should needsewing,bleaching,dyeing or washing,may I not attain perfectEnlightenment.

第三十九願：受樂同於漏盡願：設我得佛，國中天人，所受快樂，不如漏盡比丘者，不取正覺．

The vow of being happy like a Bhikkhu free of all pains,worriesand passions:If,when I attain Buddhahood,all the heavenly beings inmy land should not enjoy happiness and pleasure as that of a monkwho has exhausted all passions,pains and worries,may I not attainperfect Enlightenment.

第四十願：隨意見諸佛國願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，隨意欲見十方無量嚴凈佛土，應時如願，於寶樹中，皆悉照見．猶如明鏡，睹其面像，若不爾者，不取正覺．

The vow of seeing all Buddha lands out of one"s wish:If,when Iattain Buddhahood,bodhisattvas in my land who wish to see theimmeasurable glorious Buddha-lands of the ten quarters,should notbe able to instantly view all of them reflected in the jeweledtrees,like seeing one"s face in a clear mirror,may I not attainperfec Enlightenment.

第四十一願：聞名諸根具足願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，至於得佛，諸根缺陋不具足者，不取正覺。

第四十二願：悉得清靜解脫願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，皆悉逮得清凈解脫三昧。住是三昧，一發意頃，供養無量不可思議諸佛世尊，而不失定意。若不爾者，不取正覺。

第四十三願：聞名生處尊貴願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，壽終之後，生尊貴家。若不爾者，不取正覺。

第四十四願：修行具足德本願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，歡喜踴躍，修菩薩行，具足德本。若不爾者，不取正覺。

第四十五願：皆得三昧見佛願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，皆悉逮得普等三昧，住是三昧，至於成佛，常見無量不可思議一切諸佛。若不爾者，不取正覺。

第四十六願：自然得聞妙法願：設我得佛，國中菩薩，隨其意志願所欲聞法，自然得聞。若不爾者，不取正覺。

第四十七願：即得不退轉地願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，不即得至不退轉者，不取正覺。

第四十八願：即得諸忍究竟願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾，聞我名字，不即得至第一忍，第二第三法忍，於諸佛法，不能即得不退轉者，不取正覺。
