In addition to speaking with our voices, we also talk with our bodies. People often move their hands to emphasize what they are saying and to show the person listening to them that they are saying something important. They also make facial gestures, such as raising their eyebrows or tilting their heads at an angle. Listeners use gestures, too. They may nod their heads to show that they have understood or shake them to indicate disagreement. While the power of speech gives us the ability to make a point, and the tone of our voice indicates our mood, it is our body language that is often more meaningful than our words.

我們除了用聲音說話外，也用肢體說話。人們經常擺動雙手以強調他們所說的話，並向聆聽者表示他們所說的話很重要。他們也有臉部表情，譬如揚起眉毛或頭部做某角度的傾斜等等。聆聽者也使用肢體語言。他們也許會點頭表示聽懂了，或者會搖頭表示不認同之意。話語的力量固可賦予我們表達意見的能力，我們的聲調也可顯示我們的心情，但是我們的肢體語言要比話語更具意義。

語法重點

1.解析本課第二句：

People often move their hands to emphasize what they are saying and to show the person listening to them that they are saying something important.

人們經常擺動雙手以強調他們所說的話，並向聆聽者表示他們所說的話很重要。

上列句中：

a.句首的 People（人們）是主語，move（擺動）是及物動詞，their hands（他們的手）是賓語。

b.to emphasize what they are saying（以強調他們所說的話）是不定式短語，作副詞用，修飾主語中 move their hands。

c.and to show the person listening to them that they are saying something important，是並列連詞 and 連接另一個不定式短語 to show the personlistening to them that they are saying something important（並向聆聽者表示他們所說的話很重要），劃線的 listening to them 是分詞短語，由定語從句 who is listening to them（刪除關係代詞 who，動詞 is 變成現在分詞 being，再予省略），修飾 the person。

2.複習以下強調名詞或代詞的強調句句型：

It is + 名詞∕代詞∕+ 關係代詞（who、whom、which，均可用 that 代替）引導的定語從句（譯成"……的是該名詞∕代詞"）

未強調前：

I love Mary.

我愛瑪麗。

強調主語 I：

It is I who（或 that）love Mary.

愛瑪麗的是我。

It is Mary whom（或 that）I love.

我愛的是瑪麗。

同理：

It is music which（或 that）beautifies one"s life.

美化人生的就是音樂。

It was Peter who（或 that）was at fault.

錯的是彼得。

本課最後一句即采上列強調句句型：

..., it is our body language that（或 which）is often more meaningful than our words.

……，但是我們的肢體語言要比話語更具意義。
