China』s Christmas decoration sales surge amid festival

Churning out endless streams of colorful illuminations and galaxies of shining star tree toppers, manufacturers in Yiwu, Zhejiang, are making the best of the last few days before Christmas to seize the global festal market.

「Our festival products were sent to foreign clients months ago, and now we are preparing for next year』s orders, sending samples to our clients abroad,」 Chen Yixin, a merchant in Yiwu who has been selling Christmas decorations overseas for over 10 years, told People』s Daily Online.

There is also strong demand for Christmas decorations in China, said Chen, who added that his factory has been firing on cylinders to send out this year』s last batch of festival products.

Dubbed China』s 「Christmas Village,」 Yiwu produces over 60 percent of the Christmas decorations sold worldwide, as well as occupying 90 percent of the domestic market. According to statistics from Ningbo customs, where most of the Christmas decorations made in Yiwu are exported, over 200 million RMB of decorations were sold abroad from January to July in 2017, a number that has raised 18.8 percent compared to that last year.

Mikhail Rostov, a Moscow-based merchant, told People』s Daily Online that he has been purchasing Christmas decorations from Yiwu for years, as the products are well-designed and relatively cheap.

「Exports this year are quite stable, without any significant change compared to last year. Our main clients are mainly from the U.S., Europe, and Central and South America, while orders from Southeast Asian countries have risen significantly in 2017,」 Cai Qinliang, general secretary of the Yiwu Christmas Decoration Industry Association, told Beijing News.
