英文里的破折號翻譯成中文，是（）還是 ——？

讀英文文章時常見破折號：—

不過英文里的破折號和中文裡的還不太一樣，要怎麼打出來呢？

在word里，英文輸入狀態下，按住Alt鍵，打0151，然後鬆開Alt鍵……

英文破折號的用法很多，比如：

• 表示解釋、補充，這也是最常用的：

Its an environmental issue. — Thats not a small matter.

• 用於解釋性的插入語，相當於一個括弧：

During my vacation—I must have been insane—I decided I would ski.

• 放在引語前面，相當於一個冒號，或與分號一起用：

Uncle Wang laughingly answered—"No,no;stay where you are."

• 表示意思突然轉折：

"And may I ask—"said Xiao Wu;"but I guess its better for you to ask him about it."

• 表示遲疑猶豫：

"I—I—I rather think —maybe—Amy has taken it."

• 總括前面列舉的若干東西：

New house,larger schools,moresheep,more pigs and chickens,more horses and donkeys—everywhere we saw signs of prosperity.

不過，

英文中的破折號如果處理成中文，是不是也都用破折號呢？

不！一！定！

如果前後兩個破折號引出的部分與第一個破折號之前的成分是修飾關係，就要用漢語的括弧取代英語的破折號，比如：

Where limestone-based soils — which tend to neutralize acidity — predominated, the problem was lighter.在以具有石灰石地層的土壤（這種土壤常使酸性中和）為主的地區，這個問題常常沒那麼嚴重。

*which tend to... 修飾limestone-based soils的性質作用。

經濟學人去年一篇講用戶隱私的文章里也出現了類似的用法：

Web browsers confine JavaScript—which is ubiquitous in web pages and advertisements, and runs automatically—to a 「sandbox」 supposed to prevent it from collecting private information.網路瀏覽器會把JavaScript（它在網頁和廣告中無處不在，並且自動運行）置入「沙箱」中，以防它搜集私人信息。

*which is ubiquitous...修飾JavaScript的特性。

還有一篇介紹流行文化的成因：

In his first book, 「Hit Makers」, he analyses the psychology and economics of pop culture and argues that 「hits」—the things that get everybody talking—are based on three rules that rely on more than creative genius alone.在他的第一本書《熱門炮製者》（Hit Makers）中，湯普森分析了流行文化背後的心理學和經濟學，並指出「大熱門」（也就是人人議論的東西）的產生要遵循三條法則，所依賴的不止創意天賦。

*the things that...修飾hits的具體內容

如果前後兩個破折號引出的部分與第一個破折號之前的成分是並列關係，那麼破折號仍可保留，比如還是剛才那篇講用戶隱私的經濟學人文章：

JavaScript code can, however, still communicate with the computer server that sent it—and this is enough for Dr Tromer.不過，JavaScript代碼仍能與發送它的計算機伺服器通信——而這對特拉馬來說已經足夠了。

*and this is... 與前文屬並列關係。

還有這個句子，也是經濟學人文章里噠：

Some places already use such charges—London and Singapore are examples—but they are rarely popular.有些地方已經開始徵收此類費用——倫敦和新加坡就是例子，但這件事總歸不怎麼受歡迎。

*London and ...與前句屬並列關係。

最後敲黑板總結一下，英文破折號—：

表修飾，處理成括弧（）；

表並列，處理成破折號——。
