Only a small temple at thefoot of a hill outside the village was uprooted but nobody was hurt.

Everybody ran over to look,and there was really a hole on the ground with diameter of about one meter.

人們探著頭向裡面瞧了瞧，可是洞里黑咕隆咚的什麼也看不見。

People poked their headsinside to look, but it was pitch dark and nobody could see anything.

然而，人們卻有一種深不可測的感覺，這個洞似乎是一直通向地球中心的。

There was an inexplicablefeeling from people that the hole could be going straight down to the center ofthe Earth.

Someone said suspiciously:「That can』t be a fox-hole, can it?」

Therefore he picked up asmall rock nearby and was about to throw it down the hole.

A faint-hearted old manshuddering with fear waved his hands side-to-side and tried to talk the youngman out of doing it.

Soon scientists andacademics came at hearing about this and everyone was trying to look scholarlyand all-knowing when they calmly checked out the hole.

Later hordes of peopletrickled in to find out what was going on.

Some of them, with theireyes beaming with greed, sized up the hole over and over again.

Policemen from the localpolice station had been guarding the hole closely to prevent people fromfalling into it accidentally.

一位新聞記者拿來一根很長的細繩子，把只秤砣縛在一端，小心翼翼地往下放，

A news reporter took a verylong string, tied a scale-weight to one end and carefully let the string downthe hole.

漸漸地，繩子一尺一尺地放了下去。

Slowly the string went downfoot by foot.

可是，等到繩子全部放完之後卻拉不上來了。

But when the string ran out,it could not be pulled back.

他叫了兩三個人過來幫忙。

He asked two to threepeople for help.

大家齊心協力地使勁一拉，繩子居然在洞里的什麼地方斷掉了。

They all pulled hardtogether but the string snapped and broke somewhere inside the hole.

一位手裡拿著照相機的記者見到了這番情形，一聲不響地解掉了扎在自己腰裡的那條結實的粗繩子。

A reporter holding a camerasaw the situation and mutely untied the strong rope attached around his ownwaist in apprehension.

A scholar asked someone tobring over a high-power loudspeaker from the research lab and was about to conductfrequency analyses on the echo waves collected.

But after fiddling aroundwith the loudspeaker for a long time and trying all types of sounds, he couldnot hear a tiny trace of echo.

The scholar was puzzled andtried hard to figure out what the reason was.

然而，在眾目睽睽之下決不能就此作罷，遭人恥笑。

He felt he could not giveup in front of everybody and let them snicker at him.

So he put the loudspeakerright against the mouth of the hole and turned the volume to the maximum.

震耳欲聾的聲音源源不斷地從擴音機里傳了出來，經久不息。

Deafening soundscontinuously came out from the loudspeaker for a long while.

如果是在地面上的話，數十公里以外的人都可以聽到這種聲音。

If it were happening on thesurface of the ground, the sound could be heard from tens of kilometers away.

可是，這個洞卻來者不拒，把所有的聲音都一古腦兒地吞了下去。

But this hole tookeverything in like a black hole and swallowed all the sounds down in one gulp.

Just at this moment, asweat-soaked person squeezed out from the crowd and made a proposal loudly:「Give me this hole and I』ll fill it for you.」

接著，正在他恢復到剛才的姿勢，要好好地休息一會兒的時候，從剛才發出聲音的那個方向飛過來一塊石頭，在他面前一掠而過，往地面上掉了下去。

Just when he had resumedhis previous position to take a good rest, a rock flew over from the directionof the voice a moment ago, passed in front of his face in a flash and fell towardthe ground.
