How Much Do You Pay Attention To
The Perspective Of Top Executives And Employers?
The employer perspective. How much do you understand this? Or even consider it? Because it』s simple. The better you understand it the greater success you』re going to have in your career. Or put it in another way, the less you understand the point of view of those you work for, like your boss and management, the less likely you』ll deliver the kind of work that will impress them. And that』s a big problem if you want them to promote you and give you better opportunities.
?
?
Do you do things that matter most to others?
When I began my new career in the business world, I was a fish out of water. I was entering a completely new industry, new company, and new role (from R&D engineering to marketing). Working out of our company』s Boston headquarters, my goal was to get a transfer to Asia. During my interview with the Executive VP who hired me, he told me that this was possible, but it would likely take three years to get an expatriate assignment. Fortunately, my overseas opportunity came after 15 months.
Certainly, I worked hard to make this happen so quickly. I also had great colleagues who supported me. But the key to my standing out among so many others was my ability to develop a good understanding of how my boss viewed things. And then, doing things that responded to what I knew he paid attention to most.
This helped me raise my own standards and ability to do everything I did better. It increased my awareness of how others were viewing me and my work. More importantly, it helped me understand how top executives differentiated between good versus outstanding talent.
Understand how top executives and employers view things
For instance, from my opportunities to talk to and observe our Executive VP early in my career, I learned that . . .
Everything counts! – You may not be noticing much about the executives you』re around. But trust me, they』re noticing a lot about you and what you』re doing (and not doing!). Never underestimate their sense of what a top talent looks like and acts like. Or their ability to determine if you』re one based on their brief and simple interactions with you.
The way you do things is as important as what you do – Many people focus their attention and effort on completing tasks and making deadlines. But to get others to notice your work, always deliver results with quality and excellence in mind.
?
?
Doing what』s on your job description is what』s expected of you – Of Course, your first objective is to do your basic job well. But want your boss and management to identify you sooner for bigger and better opportunities? Then its about the value that you』re able to add to situations. This is what separates outstanding performers from just good ones.
It』s okay to make mistakes – Many people spend all their time and energy trying to avoid making mistakes. They hold back and don』t get involved. But what impresses your boss and management is your willingness to participate in and contribute to situations. They only hope that 1) you make 「smart」 mistakes and 2) you don』t make the same mistake twice.
Giving away what you have is how you get ahead – This may sound like you』re helping others to compete against you. But doing this to help make others better not only shows your ability to support the team』s success, it also shows your leadership potential to others.
Understand and respond to the perspective of others
Years ago, my recruitment company hired a young woman as an intern. She was smart, energetic, and hardworking. All great qualities that we look for when hiring young talent.
When her internship ended, we immediately offered her a full-time position as anentry-level associate. Building on her internship experience with us, she was promoted to consultant after only three months. As our youngest consultant, she became our company』s top performer in her first year as a consultant. She was 23 at the time.
When another company made this young woman an offer that she couldn』t pass up, our marketing manager invited her out for a goodbye lunch. She was very curious. So she asked this young woman, 「What』s your secret? How is it that you were able to outperform everyone else who is older and much more experienced than you?」
Her response was, 「Well, to be honest, all I do is listen very carefully to everything that Larry tells us. And then just make sure that I』m doing those things well.」 That』s a simple, but profound perspective from someone so young and so exceptional. However, it』s one that many people don』t understand throughout their entire career. And this limits their success in a big way.
Your success is based on what impresses others
The reality of your career is this. You don』t hire yourself. You don』t promote yourself. You don』t give yourself new opportunities. Others do. Especially, your boss and your top management. Everything you do you deliver in response to what they need you to do.
?
?
?So if you want to get hired or promoted for attractive opportunities, or be chosen for the best assignments, then pay more attention to how the people who have the biggest impact on your success view things and how they assess you. You don』t need an advanced degree to adopt and apply such a perspective. You can even be an entry level employee or someone completely new to a job situation. But whatever your career stage or situation, developing an employer perspectiveis fundamental to your ability to stand out and achieve the success you seek.
