自閉症，在嬰兒6個月大時就會露出端倪。牙牙學語的階段會表現相對安靜。而對於手勢和行為也不會做出特別的反應。2~3歲時候自閉癥狀會表現得越來越明顯，且會一直伴隨整個成長期。自閉症兒童大多有語言交流障礙、社交障礙，行為上表現為興趣範圍狹窄和行為模式呆板。國外對於自閉症的研究調查深度遠遠高於國內。美國疾病防控中心表示68個美國兒童中就有一個患有自閉症。而男孩患自閉症的幾率是女孩的4~5倍。而在國內很少看到有相關的數據和普及的知識。一方面關注這群體的人和組織比較有限；另一方面，很多家庭都很排斥和忌諱對自己孩子的調查和研究。

Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 out of 68 American children as on the autism spectrum increased 10 times in prevalence in 40 years. Closer research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 out of 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

每一個自閉症都是獨一無二的，而且大多數在視覺方面有超凡的能力。大約百分之四十的智力水平高於平均水平。他們有非常好的視覺天賦，所以他們用他們不一樣的視角在觀察這個世界。自閉症患者有明顯的生活障礙，不能獨立生活。我們需要用更多其他的方法教會他們，讓他們把感情和情緒表達出來。繪畫就是一種非常有效的治療方式，用以探測他們的內心世界。

Each person with autism is unique. Many of those on the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills. About 40 percent have above average intellectual abilities. Indeed, many persons on the spectrum take deserved pride in their distinctive abilities and 「atypical」 ways of viewing the world. Others with autism have significant disability and are unable to live independently.

We need to support people with autism more and make our society more accepting.
