那些聽著聽著就想歪掉的句子 M is for MONDEGREEN!
閱讀原文
This topic deals with these words:
Oronym- 一對同音異義的短語
Homophone- 同音異形異義詞
Mondegreen- 誤解的詞語
A Mondegreen is a misheard word or phrase that makes sense to the listener, but is completely incorrect.
Mondegreen 的意思就是不小心聽錯了一些詞句,對於聽者來說句子也完全通順,其實卻和實際要表達的意義相差十萬八千里。
Language is a funny thing. For one person to understand the sounds coming out of another persons mouth, they must first aurally intake the sound waves, then locate memory storages within to ascribe meaning to these sounds.
語言的確是一個有意思的東西。對於一個語言受眾者來說,他們必須要先吸收傳送者發出來的聲波,然後再在記憶里定位這些聲波傳達的意義。
Steven Pinker wrote in The Language Instinct(史蒂芬·平克 《語言本能》):
All speech is an illusion. We simply hallucinate word boundaries when we reach the end of a stretch of sound that matches some entry in our mental dictionary.
語言只是一種幻覺而已。我們幻想單詞與單詞的邊界,當我們聽到一段聲音的開端,就會去腦海的詞典里搜索與這個聲音匹配的結尾。
During the process of a thought forming in one persons mind, becoming words that leave their mouth, entering the ear of another, and registering as something meaningful, there are so many things that can go wrong, its a wonder anyone is able to communicate their ideas at all.
當一個人的思想慢慢形成,開始轉變為單詞從口中蹦出來,傳送到另一個人的耳里,然後又變成了一些有意義的詞語,這其中好多環節都有可能出錯,可最後每個人都能以這樣的方式來交流,確實也是奇蹟。
And when you throw in the fact that in every language, there are so many similar sounds that are nearly impossible to distinguish from one another... Well, things can get really messy, and hilarious! We are looking here at some of these easily-misheard phrases, in the form of what are referred to as oronyms, homophones, and mondegreens.
但不可否認的是,在所有語言中,都有那麼多相近似卻又難以分辨的讀音……好吧,我承認事情至此為止要變得混亂和搞笑起來!我們先來看看這些容易被誤聽的句子,那你就知道我在說什麼了!
One of the most famous examples is this short childrens poem:
最眾所周知的例子之一就是下面這首兒童小詩:
I scream , you scream, we all scream for ice cream .
我叫喊,你叫喊,我們都叫喊著要冰淇淋。
Another classic example is found in the lyrics of Jimi Hendrixs "Purple Haze":
另外一個例子在 Jimi Hendrix 的 Purple Haze 這首歌里出現了:
Excuse me while I kiss the sky .
失陪一下,我要去吻天空。
This psychedelic sixties line was meant to remind listeners of the feeling of being high, but since the public heard it this way:
這一條六十年代的迷幻搖滾歌詞本來是為了給聽眾朋友們一種嗨嗨的感覺,但是大家聽到的都竟然是另一句話:
Excuse me while I kiss this guy .
失陪一下,我要去吻這個夥伴。
It has become a cultural joke for the past several decades.
到目前為止,這句話仍然在美國文化里被當做經典笑話。
