Our Moon: The Most Romantic Third Wheel

You and me and the moon makes three......

We will use these vocabulary words in todays discussion:

Anyone who has deeply missed someone knows the power of the moon. Fascination with the rock that orbits Earth has existed as long as we have, and the romance between humans and the moon is an example of one of those pure, natural phenomena that transcend time or culture.

In times of heartbreak, we tend to paint the moon as an empathetic observer. Theres just something about the moon that speaks to the lovesick, the long-distance lovers, the swooning romantics, the heartbroken, the unrequited lovers, the honeymooners.

How did the moon become the unofficial patron saint of those in love? Is it because...

Her sad, watchful visage is enough to console a despondent soul.

Like the hopeless romantics, Earths gravitational pull keeps her circling it endlessly, radiating in its light.

In the lonely night when lovers miss most their beloved ones, she appears to bathe them in white.

Her cyclical waxing and waning is reminiscent of the never-stagnant phases of love.

Only those "crazy in love" know why the word lunatic is derived from luna, the Latin word for moon.

She is by nature a reflective body; and any tortured lover who cries into the night prays their sorrow will not disappear into infinite space, but will ricochet from the moon back to the ears of the beloved.

Whatever the reason, we can find countless references to love and the moon in the written histories of every human civilization on earth. Here are but two examples.

Here is a reading for those of you who would like to practice pronunciation.

Over the sea the moon grows bright;

We gaze on it far, far apart.

Lovers complain of long, long night;

I rise and long for my dear heart,

Candles blown out, fuller is light;

My coat put on, I』m moist with dew.

As I can』t hand you moonbeams white,

I go to bed to dream of you.

Somewhere Out There

lyrics by Cynthia Weil

Grammy-winning song from "An American Tale"

Somewhere out there

Beneath the pale moonlight

Someones thinking of me

And loving me tonight

Somewhere out there

Someones saying a prayer

That well find one another

In that big somewhere out there

And even though I know

How very far apart we are

It helps to think we might be wishing

on the same bright star

And when the night wind

Starts to sing a lonesome lullaby

It helps to think were sleeping

Underneath the same big sky

But in addition to talking about and to this romantic heavenly body, what if you could write a message on the moon itself?

Ai Weiwei and Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson wanted to collaborate on an art project, but Ai Weiwei couldnt leave China.

To solve the problem of distance, The Moon project became a space where anyone on Earth could connect to anyone else through art. Started in 2013, the website allowed users to write on the surface of a digital moon, and saw the contribution of 35,000 people in only 6 weeks. It ran four years before the artists who created it decided it was time to end the project in 2017.

By the time of its closing, the Moon was covered in pictures and languages from everywhere on Earth- with everything from simplistic doodles to collaborative art scenes, from bathroom jokes to marriage proposals.

Please enjoy now these images taken from The Moon project, and take the opportunity to think about what you would write, if you could leave a message for someone on the moon.
