Abandoned locations are most often associated with the rise and fall of populations. Detroit is perhaps the most famous example of this scenario. Since 1950, the city has lost more than 60% of its population; its fall from being an economic powerhouse to looking more like an apocalyptic video game is legendary.

That said, I』ve witnessed a more significant decline in rural living and landscapes around the world. I』ve been fortunate to explore more than a dozen countries (including almost every American state and Canadian province), and a unifying trend is the world』s continuing urbanization. Rural populations are declining which is leaving behind farms, farmhouses, and small ghost towns that were once filled with thriving communities and active buildings.

I』ve benefited so much personally and professionally from urban exploration. I』ve been fortunate to receive a small amount of global recognition and respect for my work. I』ve met so many amazing people who I now consider to be cherished friends. I』ve been able to express myself creatively and independently without barriers. I』ve explored more than a dozen countries, including most American states and every Canadian province. I feel like I』ve lived multiple lives and that I』m the most fortunate person on the planet. The question I have for myself lately is: how can I turn my experiences into something useful for other people?

Michigan Central Station, the former Detroit train station, is still my favourite abandoned place. Its architecture and stature are breathtaking, from both inside and outside perspectives. Historically, no other abandoned place in the world represents the rise and fall of a city』s powerful socio-economic status.

I』ve explored hundreds of famous and obscure abandoned places around the world over the past 15 years, so it』s difficult to highlight a single experience! Exploring Japan』s abandoned Gunkanjima island city was just as thrilling as photographing an abandoned airplane at night on a Texas field and then being assaulted and injured by a gun-wielding crazy man! My first documented exploration in 2002 was just as exciting as my last exploration. Most of the experiences share a common theme – the adrenalin rush of entering and exiting a location while trying to avoid detection and the hauntingly serene moments of documenting a slice of time in the location』s history.

For several years, I』ve had a keen interest to explore cities and ruins in China. I』m particularly interested in China』s northwest region.

Metropolis and other legendary science fiction films have had an enormous influence on my photography! I』m mostly influenced by sci-fi cinematographers and surrealistic painters, rather than other photographers. For example, Blade Runner is my favourite science fiction film, and I feel that its visual style is very obviously reflected in my photographic works.

My advice to newcomers is to respect the locations and their individual past, present, and potential futures. I hope anyone who explores abandoned locations will treat them like a living museum; leave everything the way it was when you arrived and let the locations speak for themselves rather than manipulate their stories for personal gain.

As for photography, I recommend paying attention to the natural light in an abandoned location. Lighting can dramatically change as the sun moves across the sky and a photographer needs to be prepared to quickly change their composition to reveal the personality and hauntingly surreal beauty of an abandoned location.
