hang out somebody to dry
Steven 英語學習DayDayUp
Leave somebody alone when they need help or support. In terms of where this meaning came from, I found several explanations. One of them is about the clothes. After the laundry is washed, clothes can be hung in an open space to dry, but the problem is that if the weather is not great, the clothes might become dirty, wet or even ripped. So when you hang somebody or something out to dry, you just leave them for no help and wish for luck.
Examples:
I hate to hang you out to dry and if I could help you in another way, I would.
That son of a bitch left me hung out to dry last night, he finished in like 30 seconds and then just up and left!
