And we are going to talk about a very interesting topic today

What its like to live in New York?

A lot of people will ask

Is it like "Sex and City"?

Is it like "Gossip Girl"?

Or is it like "How I met your mom?"

Many people will have very different perspectives and different experiences

and personally living in New York for so many years

my experience has also changed a lot

My friend, Yao, she moved here many years ago

and I bet she has a lot interesting story to share with us today

Welcome again, Yao!

Yao!

Thank you so much! Im so happy to be here as well!

Why did you move to New York?

I actually moved here 8 years ago

Because I got a job here

And then just like many young people, New York is always the starting line for many people in their career

I actually interned in a bank, then get the return offer

I see, and youve always been working in the financial industries?

Thats correct

Wow, New York and Finance industry

That sounds like a golden combination

How was your life in New York in the past 8 years?

I bet at the beginning, around the financial crisis, its probably very tough?

Yeah, definitely, I mean I joined as an analyst in the program

是的,我當時是以analyst(初級分析師)加入的

and then soon the financial crisis,

everybody was really nervous about the job, the market, and what the future would be like

Like many other New Yorkers working here,

the first period is really about work work work

and we dont have much leisure time after work as well

Just because we are junior people

but through time, you get more senior

and looks like economy is getting better

so we gradually find more fun outside of work

So now you have more life

before you had more work

What do you like the most about living in New York?

I would say its the culture and also the endless possibility

Because just like I mentioned, many of us start here

New York might be our destination or it might be just a turning point

But regardless, we do learn and grow a lot being here

How has New York shaped your life?

Sure, I will say my relationship with New York is almost like any relationship we will have encountered with a guy

When I first came here for my internship

I actually lived in Brooklyn

Its a student housing

Its actually a building with many other interns who have actually lived there in the summer

So everyday I took the subway to Wall Street to work

and then after that, sometimes I hang out with friends, go to the intern events, etc.

But I do have to say I somehow dislike it

because its always chaotic

and its always really noisy

and sometimes people are rude and yeah, its very dirty as well

Its not until maybe after 6 or 7 weeks through the internship

I started to appreciate a little bit

I mean even though the subway is really dirty at least it runs 24 hours

And then its really chaotic,

but that means at any point of time, youll be able to find a restaurant thats open and you can buy food

And of course, with that many people

sometimes theyre rude, sometimes theyre nice

you do see different perspectives of life

Its actually how I felt when i first moved to New York

Its ridiculous

I just moved from Boston at that point,

and I figured, wow, New York is so dirty

People are so rude

They dont say sorry when they hit you

and I keep on telling my colleagues and friends

Hey, I think everyone was wrong

Boston is much better than New York

and everybody just look at me as Im a weirdo

What you dont like about living in New York?

Its one dilemma for me

and thank you so much for pointing out this

Because the one thing I like about New York a lot is (that) people always come and go

So that means you get to see different people all the time

But one thing I really dont like about New York is

People come and go all the time, so every week you might have friends moving out

and every week you might be meeting new people

and sometimes its this sense of not being settling down

that would prompt you to think

Okay, is New York the final destination of my life

Whats your weekday and weekend like in New York?

I consider myself as the working professional, or a banker

but Im not the rude type

Everyday we go to work

and like most of the people, we take the subway or other means of transportation

Im actually lucky, because I work on the trading floor

I do not need to work really late hours as well

so my work hours are around the market

And after work, normally it would be either hanging out with friends

and then also like many other people

we tried to have a really healthy and balanced life

so thats how the gyms are getting more and more popular

So its like the coffee shop in Seattle... In New York, you go to gym

Exactly, and they have all different types of gyms

Sounds like a quite routined weekly life, right?

Do you do different things on weekends?

Yes, weekend is really where the varieties of things could come up

We either go to the museums and have brunch with friends

Sometimes, I even bike

As many people in New York, we enjoy biking

and the city is getting better and better to get all the bike lanes

Its actually one of my favorite activity

because it helps you clear the head

And also you get to go to different places in a very efficient manner

I bet there are a lot of people thinking about moving to New York at this moment

either because they are moving for a job or just for the personal passion

What should people consider before deciding to move to New York?

One thing I do learn a lot from the 8 years experience being here is

One would always need to be open-minded

because there is so much information flowing through everyday

But at the same time, one would also need to be aware not to lose themselves

because of all this influence and impact

One might actually feel easy to fall into a limbo stage

because they just dont know which direction to take, which way to take

and they just feel the city is not for me because there are so many things to try out

but I will have to say

In this particular city, there is still love and there are always beautiful things

And its definitely a destination thats worth exploring

Memes

Living in New York is not safe

Alright, I will elaborate a little bit

As we all know, New York is actually quite big

It consists of five boroughs

And some places in New York, you just just need (to be) more cautious around

because it might be dark

and it might be a little bit isolated

but most of the places that we might actually go is actually quite safe

New York is full of Bankers, Fashionistas, and artists

Those three are definitely considered majority here

but in addition to banker, I think there is a bigger group thats called "working professional"

Thats usually bankers, lawyers, doctors, consultants

As I used to be...

Exactly

是啊

and then for artists, there are actually a lot of street artists who does photography, painting

and a lot of them are now actually center around Brooklyn

so if we go to Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick

如果去Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick

there are a lot of studios and artists being there as well

Its definitely a cool place to go

Being single is the most beautiful thing in New York

This is your chance to use the poop-face

I know!

Okay, I have to clarify for this one

One should always feel beautiful

no matter whether theyre single, or they are married, or they are in a relationship

I do think that being single in New York opens the door for many different activities

and the opportunity to meet many people

But as I said, depends on what is your final pursuit of happiness

Sometimes it could be a little bit tough to find the perfect person here

just because the other person might be looking for...

Completely different thing?

Exactly, and also...

Because of people coming and going,

many times you might actually meet somebody,

but you might not be able to end up with them in the longer term

Silence is the most elusive commodity in New York

Right, and I have to say the one noise that one can hear the most is the fire siren and the police cars

and for some reason, they just show up everywhere

Which makes you feel its very unsafe

But indeed, you can think of it from another perspective

because they are always on the street

Its actually safe

Thats a good point!

Are you able to fall asleep?

Yes, because after some point, you just get used to it

When you are actually in a really quiet place, you may find it harder to fall a sleep

just because you dont have the noise anymore

Oh, you are too used to it!

Subway is dirty and old in New York

You will see things on the subway that you may not be able to unseen

I feel bad that you havent been using that loving emoji

I will use both of them

No no no, I guess subways truly this

If I have to pick up, I will pick this as well

Right, but I have to put this smily face...

I need to come up with some memes that will allow you to give a loving emoji

To be fair, the New York subway, even though its dirty, and they just stop for no reason

and you get to see some strange people

It does run 24 hours, and it gets you through all five boroughs around the city

So in the way, its still somehow kind of efficient

So it allows you to actually explore that endless possibility until late night

and you can still get home

And, for people like me who does drive too well

I dont drive at all....

Public transportation, and now with all this Uber, Lyft, and taxis are definitely a good way for people to get around

New Yorkers have aversion to go anywhere more than 3 stops away from apartment

Sounds like you dont because you have tons of fun activities on weekends

Is that true for a lot of people in New York?

I would say...

Yes

Especially for people who are so comfortable in their comfort zone

I would say maybe three subway stops is already too far for them

or three blocks will actually be their areas of activities

I actually heard in the dating scene,

some people will refuse to see each other if they are over certain distance away

What?!

Is it because everything is available, is around within three blocks?

Restaurant, gym, coffee, whatever you need

Especially for many newcomers working in Finance

They like to live around Financial District, because their office and their home are normally five minutes away

Taxi drivers are the most aggressive and non-conventional in New York

I will say all the people who drive in New York are really aggressive

no matter whether you are driving or you are biking

I think its just because this city is so crowded

and people always want to get to their destination as fast as possible

People are always rushing

and then, they are trying to fight the narrow road

I personally feel that Im becoming more a fast walker now after living in New York for so many years

First time I came here, everybody was passing me

and a lot of people hit me and never said sorry

They probably think I was the trouble on the street moving so slow

But now, I move so fast that when I saw those people, I get into that "annoyed" mood
