To Be A Product Manager | Week 57
This journal helps me improve 1% every day…
Welcome to Week 57 of
To Be A Product Manager
I think it』s been 20 days since I updated the last product journal, after quitting my first job in a VR startup, I took some time off and traveled with my buddy Ben to Philippines. He』s also in a really bad state of his life, and I wish the trip to the beach could give him some comfort and gain some energy back to Shenzhen.
And it did help both of us, a lot. I』m happy to meet my friend Mikaela again, he has a taste of what travel is really about, and all of us are having a great time together. Here』s our travel vlog to Cebu, Philippines.

Back to the topic, this is my first week at Bytedance. I work in a startup they acquired this Feb, an AR camera department FACEU.
I used to work for a small startup, so compared with big firm, there』s a contrast. They provide great free 3 meals and afternoon tea, which is important for me haha, great environment to work in, great housing subsidies and great team to work with. There』s really nothing you can complain about, but just from my first week』s impression, there』s also problems within different teams and management.
We had a great product, however considering the people and time they put in, the productivity is relatively low. Maybe I just joined the company, and there』s so much that I don』t know but requires a lot of efforts to build a great product, I generally believe there』s a huge space to improve on the productivity side and every employee』s workflow.
My concerns is that, if you work with people who don』t give a fuck about workflow and always pushing the things they can see forward, you are the one who』s going to suffer. Constant interruptions are going to suck your dry. But I do hope Bytedance can bring in some healthy management ways to boost FACEU.
What I』m leanring
Basically everything. From setting up all the accounts and collaborating softwares, learning how to use them, to getting to people from different teams and personalities.
I know the second one is way more important, but to be honest, I didn』t spend too much time on it now. Before I started writing, I had a conversation with product leader, he said I』m too quiet.
I think I was born to be like this, quiet and shy at first, because I』m trying to figure out what』s happening and learning everyone, then passionate and outgoing, confident enough to say whatever.
This could be my next week challenge, be proactive and get along with others. At least this is something I could control.
Besides, I』m also learning ARKit and CorelML documentations, I think every product manager should at least fully understand what the current technology are capable of, then you can start from there and be creative.
Still, amped for challenges and obstacles ahead.
My name is Zake Zhang, a product manager based in Shenzhen, China. I write weekly product journal and reflection.
Thanks for reading and let』s keep on hacking!
Warm Regards,
Zake
