Chinese scientist Zhang Miman wins 2018 L』Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science award

Five outstanding researchers received the 2018 L』Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science award at a ceremony in Paris, France on Thursday evening for their groundbreaking research in the life sciences. One of the recipients was Chinese vertebrate(脊椎動物的) paleozoology(古動物學) scientist Zhang Miman.

82-year-old Zhang, also known as Meemann Chang, is a palaeontologist（古生物學家） at the Institute of Vertebrate Palaeontology and Palaeoanthropology（古人類學） (IVPP). Such is her standing within the discipline, many species, such as the extinct sarcopterygian（肉鰭魚類；有骨魚） fish Meemannia, have been named in her honour. In 2016, Zhang was given the Romer-Simpson Lifetime Achievement Award, which is the highest prize in vertebrate palaeontology, reports Chinese news outlet Xinhua.

She was nominated for "her pioneering work on fossil records leading to insights on how aquatic vertebrates adapted to life and land", UNESCO said in a statement. Zhang is the fifth Chinese female scientist to win the award.

The other four winners were physician and paediatrist（兒科醫生，兒科學家） Heather Zar from South Africa, British plant scientist Caroline Dean, ecology（生態學；社會生態學） and environmental scientist Amy Austin from Argentina and Canadas developmental biologist Janet Rossant.

As a result of a partnership between French cosmetics company LOréal and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the LOréal-UNESCO For Women in Science foundation was founded in 1998 to promote equality in science. Each laureate（得獎者） will be given US$100,000 as part of their prize.
