讓成功人士脫穎而出的關鍵因素是什麼?他們在哪些方面做得比大多數人更好?他們又避開了哪些坑?作為一個開了二十多年獵頭公司的CEO,我一直在問這些問題。坦白說,我對成功學很痴迷。我很好奇,為什麼同樣都是優秀、勤奮的人,甚至有的人還沒那麼勤奮優秀,但卻比其他人更能取得成功。
成功人士懂得如何獲得更大的成功
這些年我和無數人聊過,我發現,成功的人往往更容易理解那些影響職業成功的重要理念和關鍵因素。因此,他們更了解自己的職業規劃和職業發展。他們能更好地抓住機會,做出更好的職業決定,克服工作上遇到的困難。這也是為什麼我寫了兩本書,強調職商的重要性——《知己知彼》和《如何成就未來經理人》。因為理解那些已被驗證的職業成功理念和因素是你成功的基礎。
我給你舉個例子,「卓越的表現勝於一切」,這是一個基本的職業成功的理念,但很多人卻沒意識到。我之所以這麼說,是因為人們總是問我,我是不是應該讀個MBA或者讀個碩士啊。我看到很多人費時費力拿了一堆文憑,但這些學歷並沒有幫他們實現自己的職業目標。他們以為學歷是幫自己達到目標的最關鍵的因素,其實並不然。
當然,MBA或碩士學位可能會吸引一些僱主的眼光,可以是一塊敲門磚。但是要想在一家好公司里工作或者升職,最重要的是你優秀的表現和令人印象深刻的成就。
最能影響你成功的事情
上個月我的獵頭團隊向一位BAT客戶介紹兩名市場經理候選人的時候,這個職業成功的概念——「卓越的表現勝於一切」,又一次得以證實。其中一位候選人是我們所說的「科班」出身。他曾就讀於一所頂尖大學,曾在一家跨國公司工作,並擁有海外MBA學位。他有巨大潛力,在之前的公司里一路晉陞到了經理的位置。令人印象深刻,對吧?
另一位候選人來自一所二本院校,他也從來沒有在跨國公司工作過。他加入了一個20人的數字營銷廣告公司,現在這家機構已經有100多名員工。老實說,我以前從未聽說過他所在的公司,但這家公司的2位創始人都是從一家知名的快消品公司出來的,他們的客戶也都是頂尖的消費品公司。所以這位候選人從他領導那裡學到了很多東西,並且學會為頂級客戶服務。他從入門開始做起,但在五年之後,他領導著一個20人的團隊。
當我們做背景調查時,其中一位創始人說這個候選人是幫助他們建立業務的關鍵人物。雖然他的簡歷沒有第一位候選人那麼引人注目,但他領導了一個更大的團隊,開展了更大的項目,並承擔了更大的責任。他跟我們描述他所做的事情以及他是如何做到的,給我們留下了深刻的印象。明眼人都看得出來他是真的有料。我們的客戶也深有同感。你們猜他們最終僱傭了誰?
看清職業成功的現實和真相
如果你認為這是一個特例,我們來玩一個遊戲。這有兩個候選人,一個是你,另一個是我。我們的年齡相近,在同一個部門為同一家公司工作,在同一個老闆手下做同樣的工作。
你可以選擇從任何一所高校獲得任何你想要的績點,添加任何你想要的高級學位。無論你選擇什麼,我的學校,學位和績點都不如你。
但是我可以選擇任何我想要的成就,我的表現和業績都比你的好。相比於你,我可以達到更高的目標和關鍵業績指標,我可以領導一個更大的團隊,管理更多的客戶,處理更困難的情況。
現在,我們都想要競爭老闆手下一個級別更高的空缺職位。你認為他會選誰?換種說法,你想成為誰?你還是我?當別人在評估你是否適合更高的崗位以及更重的責任,或者他們是否願意給你你想要的薪資時,你的成就證明了你到底有多麼的優秀。越是讓人印象深刻越好。這就是為什麼,「卓越的表現勝於一切」這個概念是你最需要了解和接納的成功關鍵因素。
你所追崇的職業成功理念和因素是什麼?

Are You Building Your Career Success Around?
What are the key career success factors that allow highly successful people to stand out over others? What do they do better than most others to become more successful? What are the things that they avoid doing? As the CEO of a recruitment firm for over 20 years, I ask questions like these to others all the time. Frankly, I』m fascinated by success. I』m incredibly curious why some people are able to achieve it much better than others who are just as qualified and hardworking. And often, even less so.
Successful people understand what leads to greater success
After talking to many people over the years, here』s what I』ve found. Highly successful people tend to have a better understanding of key concepts and factors that most impact career success. As a result they』re better at their career planning and career development. Their better able to capture attractive opportunities, make good career decisions, and manage difficult job situations. This is why I』ve written two books on the importance of having good career sense (Know The Game, Play The Game and How to Develop Yourself As A Future Executive, Today). Because understanding and embracing tried and true career success concepts and factors is your foundation for achieving the success you seek.
I』ll give you an example. Nothing Beats Excellence. This is a basic career success concept that many don』t recognize nearly enough. I say this because people ask me all the time if they should get an MBA or Master degree. I see many others spend lots of time and money on additional qualifications that don』t have a big impact on their ability to achieve their career objective. As if qualifications are the most critical factor for attaining what you want. They』re not.
Sure, an MBA or Master degree attracts attention and opens doors with employers for you. But to get a job or promotion in a good company, it』s the quality and impressiveness of your performance and achievements that matter most.
The things that most impact your success
This career success concept, Nothing Beats Excellence, was shown just last month with two marketing manager candidates that my recruitment firm introduced to a BAT client. One candidate had what we call a 「pedigree」 background. He attended a top university, worked for a leading multinational, and had an overseas MBA. He was a high potential who had risen to a manager level in his company. Impressive, right?
The other candidate went to a 2nd tier university. He never worked in a multinational before, but was able to join a 20-person digital marketing agency that was now over 100 employees. Frankly, I』d never heard of his company before. But it was run by two founders from a top FMCG company, and their clients were all top consumer product companies. So this candidate had learned from top people and had to service top clients. He began at an entry level, but after five years was leading a 20-person team.
When we did reference checks, one of the founders said that this candidate was a key person to help build their business. Although his resume wasn』t nearly as eye-catching as the first candidate, he had led a bigger team, led larger projects, and handled bigger responsibilities. Listening to him describe what he did and how he did it was impressive. It was easy to tell how outstanding he was. Our client felt this way too. Guess who they hired?
Be clear on career success realities and truths
If you think this is a unique case, let』s do this. There are two candidates. One is you. The other is me. We』re the same age. We work for the same company in the same department. We do the same job under the same boss.
You can pick any degree from any school with any GPA you want. Add any advanced degrees you want. Whatever you choose, my school, degree(s), and GPA are less impressive.
But I get to pick any achievements I want, where my performance and results are better than yours. I can hit higher targets and KPIs, lead a bigger team, manage bigger clients, and handle tougher situations than you.
Now, we』re both being considered for a new position at the next level that our boss needs to fill. Who do you think he』ll choose? I』ll put it another way. Who would you rather be? You or me? When it comes to how others assess you for bigger roles and responsibilities, or whether they』ll to pay you what you want, your achievements are the proof of how good you actually are. Where the more impressive the better. That』s why Nothing Beats Excellence is a key career success factor to understand and embrace.
What proven career success concepts and factors do you live by?
That』s just one example. There are many other key career success concepts and factors related to the platforms you join, people you learn from, way you do things, and decisions you make that greatly impact your success. It』s simple. Apply them and you』re going to be much more successful. Ignore or overlook them and good luck achieving your career objectives.
Before you do something well you need to understand it well first. Is this even possible to become really good at anything without having a good sense of what it takes to be highly successful at it? Don』t be someone who just looks for answers that are specific to your job situation. Instead, be someone who identifies and embraces key career success concepts and factors. Invest in building your career sense, or Career Success IQ (CSIQ). Because this is where your ability to accelerate your career development, make better job moves and career decisions, and better pursue and achieve your career success all begins. I hope that makes a lot of sense.
