Translation: Fantasy on Underground Forest (ZhangKangkang)

(translated by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)

Generally forest is majestic and splendid.

It shields off the sky and sun; also it isvast and boundless.

Wind turns it into an expanse of green sea.

Amidst quietness of the night it stands likea sturdy wall.

That is forest—a creation of Earth longbefore the creation of man and a proud epitome of the botany world.

------------------------------------------------------------------

But in your case, why are you living hereinside a gloomy, pitch-dark, serene and abysmal gorge?

In looking for you, I have climbed highmountain-ridges and passed through long rock-caves.

Wisps of smoky clouds have floated by me.

Your vibrant treetop branches are only wideenough to hold the tip of my foot and their heights are shorter than grass onmountain slopes.

You seem to be bottomless in depth andboundless in width.

Nobody has seen what you look like in itsentirety.

Even though you are in possession ofprecious trees—the invaluable treasure of Mother Nature, yet you are taciturnin nature.

It』s unfair that you keep a low profile fromthe rest of the world.

You are indeed a rare underground forest.

Where did you fly in from?

What misfortune you have run across triggeringyour descend into this dark abyss in which you have endured for a long periodof time?

------------------------------------------------------------------

That had to have happened in a far distantera.

At that time this place could be an aromaticgrass-lawn or a resource-rich lakeside-marshland.

Likely the natural environment was beautifuland everything was thriving.

But suddenly a huge volcano-eruption changedeverything in a flash.

With rampant gusts, scorching-hot air, airbornerocks, and outpouring magma, the sky turned pitch-black in a wink and all hellbroke loose as if the end of the world had descended.

------------------------------------------------------------------

People didn』t know why Earth had such atemper tantrum.

Maybe it merely had a penchant for physicalexercise.

Oh, the sound of luxuriant tree trunkssnapped in tempest and the sight of Earth』s 「hot blood」 shooting up into thesky were so breathtaking that even the sun saluted respectfully.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally Earth』s burst of anger was over, andeverything calmed down.

Amidst all the serenity, grass-lawns hadturned into mirror-like lakes, and former lake bottom had changed intogrotesque rock formations.

The catastrophe had melted rocks and transformedthem into grit; it obliterated steep mountains and converted them into abysses.

Everything was altered.

Charred rocks replaced green forests, andblackened magma buried lovely wild flowers.

It was such a quiet world.

Everything was hushed; there was no chirpingof birds or rustling of leaves.

------------------------------------------------------------------

In all the vestiges left behind by volcaniceruptions, here in the wooded mountain 180 kilometers from Jingpo Lake insideNing』an County of Heilongjiang Province, a long-dormant volcano has left behindseven irregular deep trenches.

They are surrounded by steep cliffs on allfour sides.

Crags and grotesque rocks are scatteredeverywhere.

The deepest spot of the trenches measuresone-hundred-and-ten meters, and the shallower spots are at least thirty toforty meters.

Bottoms of the trenches are wide and strewnwith giant rocks crumbled from above during earthquakes ten thousand years ago.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Volcanoes created gorges and abysses;however, no lives were spared and left behind.

The mountains and valleys were barren.

The sun was still high above in the sky, butthe mountains and valleys were stripped of all colors.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Many years had passed.

風兒把山頂上岩石的表層化作了泥土,瘠薄而細密;

Wind turned the top layer of rocks onmountain peaks into soil that was wafer-thin and fine.

Then the wind took the trouble of bringingover seeds from afar dense-forests and let rain wake them up.

The tiny green spouts on mountain slopeswere able to curry the favor of sunlight, which big-heartedly embraced them.

So grayish-black, igneous rocks turned greenwith vegetation.

Everywhere on cliffs and mountain-peaks wasluxuriously rich with plants.

Birds had returned to sing songs incelebrating life.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Yet things remained the same as before inthat gloomily dark gorge.

Everywhere was pitch-black, barren, gloomyand soundless.

Loggers could hear echoes of dripping springwater in caves at bottom of valleys.

Hunters were tracking their games from howlingof wolves and roaring of tigers.

Up to that point of time, there was nothingother than thick layers of moss in the gorge.

Thousands of years had passed and lives ofMother Nature were everywhere.

But the gorge wasn』t good enough to beprovided with even a stem of grass.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe birds flew past the cliffs and seedsfrom grass-stems which they carried in their beaks fell off into here.

但是草籽兒沒有發芽;

But those grass seeds did not germinate.

Maybe mountain springs flowed through thegorge bottom and carried along several flower seeds, but little flowers did notgrow from them.

Sunbeams were supposed to be fair to all,but such was not the case here.

No! Sunlight was indulged in the glowing (1)cheers and respect from high mountains, large rivers and open countries.

However, the bottom of this deep gorge wasnever on sunlight』s visiting list which reluctantly hung around at the mouth ofthe cliffs and put up a friendly front by nodding.

But light from the sun never paid attentionto this sunk-in big trench and had forgotten it for a long time.

Even at noon during summertime, occasionallythere were few beams of light peeking curiously at the valley bottom.

However, they were sidelong glances withouta lot of warmth.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunlight didn』t like the gorge.

How could it be possible that the gorgedidn』t know that?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Was sunlight fair?

How could it be possible that the gorgedidn』t understand that?

------------------------------------------------------------------

The gorge was indeed unfortunate.

It could have turned into a chain ofpearl-like little lakes just like 「Five Connective Lakes」—the high mountainbarrier lakes in Dedu County.

That way it could easily win accolades frompeople.

But it didn』t.

Quietly it lied below this cliff and was inno hurry to flaunt itself to the world.

It intentionally hid its identity from thepublic, and was content with staying low among these desolate mountains as ifit was expecting and hoping for something.

After all what was it expecting and hoping?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Strong wind from the vast sky passed throughhere and made a stopover.

Without further enquiry, it quicklyunderstood needs of the gorge.

It ground the stones at the mouth of thetrench into powders and sprinkled them bit by bit into rock cracks of thegorge.

------------------------------------------------------------------

After days of companionship, the sparklingclean spring-water finally understood the gorge.

Water flowed out from the caves, and dripsof it seeped into rock cracks and turned ground-up stone- powders into soil.

------------------------------------------------------------------

A Yezo spruce at mountain top kept a watchof the gorge all the time.

Even though there was no verbalcommunication between them, yet they mutually understood each other.

The spruce was respectful of the gorge』sprofound personality, appreciative of its tenacious perseverance, indignanttowards the sunlight』s favoritism attitude, and displeased at what had happenedto the gorge.

In the fall, it bore loads of seeds whichpurposefully jumped into the bosom of the gorge to devote themselves to the「underground」 which was completely devoid of sunlight.

Perhaps due to the gorge』s inspiration, seeds of immaculate white-birches, upright poplars, and elegant Amur cork-treesarrived in groups of ones, tens, or hundreds.

Their presence did not stem from pity, butfrom curiosity to test the strength of lives under Mother Nature.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Several thousands of years had passed, andthen further tens of thousands of years had gone by.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Frail tiny spouts had died in freezingfrosts.

As always, strong ones survived and grew upin deep trenches without sunlight.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thousands and then tens of thousands ofyears had elapsed, and mankind entered into era of civilization.

Finally one day men discovered a miracle atthe mouth of a former extinct volcano.

It was a miracle in the history of life.

In the dark and gloomy gorge, oak trees weregrowing luxuriantly, and pine trees had flourished into woods (2).

Neatly and densely a spectacular forest hademerged.

Since all its trees and other plants werecongregated in a water-well-like deep valley that was pitch-dark withoutsunlight, someone appropriately coined a name for it and called it 「undergroundforest」.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If it had turned into a beautiful littlelake or a magnificent deep pond long time ago, maybe it could have been sparedall the hardship that it had to endure for being 「underground」.

But it was loath to do so.

It understood even though the sun dissed it,over time fairness would prevail.

To pursue evenhandedness, it rather waited forseveral tens of thousands of years as its price.

It struggled in darkness for betterment, andembraced life with enthusiasm and earnestness.

Despite sunlight had turned its back on thegorge for a thousand times, yet the gorge succeeded in reaching for the skywith its two strong arms and dedicated its stalwart timber to mankind selflessly.

Consequently it received the glory which ithad been anticipating and yearning over a long period of time.

------------------------------------------------------------------

To find you, I have climbed high mountain-peaks—outof curiosity initially.

To my surprise, what I discover about youoverwhelms me.

I don』t want to leave.

In seeing glitter of spring water in stream,I understand why you have tears (3) in your smile.

------------------------------------------------------------------

The bright sun of autumn dances happily ontree tops and brightens up greenish pine trees, golden rock-maple trees, orangepoplar trees, and fiery-red maple trees in the forest.

Look how much sunlight favors them as if it hasso bountiful all along.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Wind sneaks out from woodland underneath myfeet and delivers joyous and deep singing from the sea of trees.

Are you singing those songs to your cohortswho have so stunchly helped you in times of difficulties?

Where are they now?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Withered grass makes rustling sounds belowmy feet as if it is reminding me to pay attention to it.

Indeed the cocky grass is higher at altitudethan you—the underground forest.

Yet I want to climb down the old vine to thedeep valley bottom.

Over there even though the trees may bepositioned far lower than the small grass on top of the mountain, yet it couldproudly pronounce: 「I am a forest.」

------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh I hear it now.

I hear echoes from verdant mountain-tops andhigh-up Heaven』s court in saying: 「I am a forest.」

------------------------------------------------------------------

Every time after Mother Nature has avigorous exercise, she has to damage and destroy something.

But then there always are some stubborn soulswhich refuse to give in—absolutely no conceding defeat.

We would like to thank inspiration from undergroundforest—the newborn star amongst lives in the old-fashioned Earth.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I admire those underground 「seeds」 whichpursue brightness in the midst of darkness, and I wish you are able to createmore miracles.

------------------------------------------------------------------

附註:

(1) 「glowing」

「Glowing」 is an adjective which I like to use often.

Beside its common meanings of 「shining softly」 and 「reddish gold color」, italso means 「full of praise」.

The common phrases which you often come across are: 「glowing endorsement」, 「glowingcomments」, 「glowing cheers」, 「glowing respect」, etc.

Find out how they are used and add them to your vocabulary arsenal.

(2) 「woods」 and 「forest」

Originally the sentence 「pinetrees had flourished into woods」 waswritten as 「pine trees had flourished into aforest」.

Notice in the next sentence, the word 「forest」 appears and therefore I use theword 「woods」 instead of 「forest」 in this sentence instead to avoid duplicationin two consecutive sentences.

(3) 「tear」 or 「tears」

You can count the number of 「drops of tears」, but maybe not 「tears」.

So shouldn』t you say 「tear in youreyes」 instead of 「tears in youreyes」.

Actually both are correct, except Google search counts are 402,000 for 「tearsin your eyes」 and only 170,000 for 「tear in your eyes」. So 「tears in your eyes」seem to be more popular.

As a corollary, 「drops of tears」 (231,000 hits) is more commonly used than「drops of tear」 (36,800).

What I am telling you is sometimes don』t guess!

If you are not certain about the correctness of certain phrases, do someresearch to make sure.
