Dos and Donts:
Excuse the typos please!
Time for another 知乎LIVE session!
Being professional and effective in cross-cultural meetings can be very challenging for second language speakers. Misunderstandings are common, and sometimes our foreign colleagues may get the wrong impression of us. When I first came to China and began my career as a business consultant, I was completely unaware of how many problems can be caused by cultural differences in communication. I have made so many cultural mistakes in my business career in China that I cant even count them. When I think back on my early career, I cant believe I was ever so stupid. But when I meet new foreigners that just arrived in China from different countries, I
observe that they commonly make the same mistakes that I did!
I have accidentally embarrassed myself in front of business owners, insulted CEOs, and unknowingly humiliated investors. To be honest, I feel it is actually amazing that I achieved any success at all!
One subject upon which many friends ask me for help is regarding what to say during meetings so that their international colleagues will be able to see their professionalism, and so they don』t accidentally cause any misunderstandings. Ive participated in hundreds, possibly thousands of meetings, and I think I finally have enough experience to make a small training on this subject. To make this LIVE really simple, I plan to share with you exactly what to say (and why), what not to say (and why) so that mistakes and misunderstandings are impossible. Some example situations are:
