四月的維也納真令我失望。

April』s Vienna disappointed me.

大片大片的草地上，只是綠色連著綠色，見不道能讓人眼前亮起來的明媚的小花。

A big stretch of lawn had nothing but green color connecting green color without any eye-catching, bright and dainty little flowers.

沒有花的綠地是寂寞的。

A lawn without flowers was a lonesome sight.

我對架車同行的小呂說：「四月的維也納可真乏味！

I said to the accompanying driver Little Lu: 「April』s Vienna is dull.

綠色到處泛濫，見不到花兒，

Green color is everywhere, but flowers are nowhere in sight.

下次再來非躲開四月不可！」

Next time when I come I have to avoid April.」

小呂聽了，將車子停住，把我領到路邊一片非常開闊的草地上，

When Little Lu heard what I said, he parked the car and led me to a wide open lawn by the side of the road.

讓我蹲下來扒開草好好看看。

He let me squat down to take a good look inside the grass.

我用手撥開草一看，原來青草下邊藏著滿滿一層小花，白的、黃的、紫的；

I pushed the grass aside to check and it turned out that hiding inside the green grass were full of small flowers in white, yellow, and purple colors.

純潔、嬌小、鮮亮；這麼多、這麼密、這麼遼闊！

They were wholesome, petite, brilliant, plentiful, dense and widespread.

它們比青草只矮几厘米，躲在草下邊，好像只要一使勁兒，就會齊刷刷地冒出來…….

Even though they were a few millimeters shorter than the grass in hiding, it seemed with efforts they could easily come out together into view.

「什麼時候才能冒出來？」我問。

「When would they come out?」 I asked.

「也許過幾天，也許就在明天。」小呂笑道，「四月的維也納可說不準，一天一個樣兒。」

「Maybe it could be in a few days』 time, or maybe it could be tomorrow,」 Little Lu smiled. 「April』s Vienna is full of surprises and it could look different every day.」

當天夜裡，冷雨伴著涼風下了起來。

At night on that day, cold rain came with chilly wind.

後來的幾天，雨時下時停，太陽一直沒露面兒。

In the next few days, rain fell intermittently but the sun did not come out at all.

我很快要離開維也納去義大利了，

Shortly afterwards, I was on my way leaving Vienna for Italy.

小呂為我送行。

Little Lu drove to see me off.

路上我對小呂說：「這次看不到草地上的那些花兒，真有點兒遺憾，

On the road I said to Little Lu: 「Regrettably I am not able to see those flowers on the lawn.

我想它們剛冒出來時肯定很壯觀。」

I bet they would be spectacular when they come out.」

小呂駕著車沒說話，大概也有些為我失望吧。

The driving Little Lu did not say anything and maybe he was a bit disappointed because of me.

外邊毛毛雨把車窗遮得像拉了一道紗簾。

The drizzle-covered car windows looked like sheer curtains.

車子開出去十幾分鐘，小呂忽然對我說：「你看窗外——」

After the car had been driven for ten and some odd minutes, Little Lu suddenly said to me: 「Take a look outside the window.」

隔著雨窗，看不清外邊，

Through the raindrop-covered windows I could not see clearly what were outside.

但窗外的顏色明顯地變了，白色、黃色、紫色，在車窗上流動。

But obviously the colors had changed into white, yellow and purple waving outside the windows.

小呂停了車，伸手拉開我這邊的車門，未等我明白是怎麼回事，便說：「去看吧——你的花！」

Little Lu stopped the car, pulled open the car door at my side, and said before I had a chance to understand what was going on: 「Go and take a look at your flowers.」

迎著吹在臉上的細密的、涼涼的雨點，我看到的竟是一片花的原野。

Against the dense and cold raindrops falling on my face, what I saw was actually an open wilderness full of flowers.

這正是前幾天那片千萬朵小花藏身的草地，

This place was in fact the lawn where thousands of little flowers were hiding a few days ago.

此刻那些花兒一下子全冒了出來，頓時改天換地，

At that moment, all those flowers had come out and changed everything around.

整個世界鋪滿了全新的色彩。

The whole world was covered with new colors.

雖然遠處大片大片的花與濛濛細雨融在一起，低頭卻能清晰地看到，在冷雨中，每一朵花都傲然挺立，明亮奪目，神氣十足。

Even though an expanse of flowers at distance was blended with misty drizzles, but in looking down, I could clearly see every flower was standing up proudly, brightly, brilliantly and cockily in the chilly rain.

我驚奇地想：它們為什麼不是在溫暖的陽光下冒出來，偏偏在冷風冷雨中拔地而起呢？

I thought in surprise: 「Why don』t they come up under warm sunlight but have chosen to emerge in these chilly wind and rain instead?

小小的花兒居然有如此的氣魄！

I am really surprised that these little flowers had such fortitude.」

我的心頭怦然一震，這一震，使我明白了生命的意味是什麼，是——勇氣！

My mind suddenly felt a jolt, and this jolt made me understand what life was all about—and it was courage.
