a. The two of you rose to fame on the same day.

a. Other scholars』 stick-in-the-mud minds are confined to single literature discipline.

a. Overwhelmingly enlightening and informative are your writings.

b. Your compositions reveal the secret recesses,

遷擢潤朝廷。

a. Your promotions to higher ranks grace the dynasty.

a. How can I express my congratulation to you—my old friends?

a. As well, I worry time would not pass smoothly.

棲遑分半菽,

a. Food is insufficient and I scramble to make ends meet.

a. Restlessly I am like drifting duckweed at mercy of water current.

俗態猶猜忌,

a. While the world was cynical towards dynasty official in power,

獨慚投漢閣,

a. Regrettably I was trapped in enemy territory.

b. I alone am ashamed to have jumped from the tower of Han,

俱議哭秦庭。

a. Opinions varied in seeking foreign military assistance.

b. we all discussed weeping in the courtyard of Qin.

還蜀祇無補,

a. In returning to side of Emperor, I provided no help to him

b. I returned to Shu, but was simply of no help,

囚梁亦固扃。

華夷相混合,

a. Han and foreign ethnic people mingled together.

帝力收三統,

a. Calendar year reverted to name of Emperor』s dynasty.

舊都俄望幸,

a. People in old capital looked forward to Emperor』s arrival.

b. The former capital expected the emperor』s arrival soon,

清廟肅惟馨。

a. Imperial ancestral temple was dignified and incense-permeated.

b. the pure ancestral temple was solemn and fragrant.

雜種雖高壁,

a. Although those crossbreeds were behind high walls,

b. Though those half?-breeds had high walls,

長驅甚建瓴。

a. yet our army quickly bulldozed them over.

b. we galloped on, more forceful than a pitcher of water on a roof.

焚香淑景殿,

a. Joss sticks were lit in Shujing Palace.

b. Burning incense in Pure Light Basilica,

漲水望雲亭。

a. High water provided for Emperor』s pavilion sightseeing pleasure.

法駕初還日,

a. On day when his Majesty』s coach first returned,

a. I was unworthy to be a personal aide to Emperor.

b. Unworthy of my post, I hurried past Roosting Phoenix Tower,

朝回歎聚螢。

a. Back from court, my firefly-infested residence looked grim.

喚人看騕褭,

a. I resembled a prized steed that sought appreciation.

b. I called people to look at these Yaoniao steeds,

掘劍知埋獄,

a. Similar to an unearthed sword, my talent was buried.

侏儒應共飽,

a. Things fell into small people』s laps and they didn』t have to earn them.

b. Those dwarves there surely all ate their fill,

漁父忌偏醒。

a. As a righteous person, I was mistrusted for speaking my mind soberly.

b. the fisherman hated the one who was singularly sober.

旅泊窮清渭,

a. In this journey, I stayed perfectly virtuous like limpid River Wei.

b. Journeying along, I went all the way up the clear Wei,

長吟望濁涇。
