dead in the water

Dont be confused, this phrase is NOT about someone/something is dead or killed in the water.

It is talking about the sailing boat cannot move or sail in the sea. When winds stop blowing, the sailing boat loses its power and cant move.

Nowadays, when the engine is broken or damaged or not working, the ship is dead in the water.

This phrase is often used to describe the situation where someone or something cant continue to do what it is supposed to do, not functioning as a department or project.

For example: And I know its not your style to tell your partners what to do, but if you dont make it your style, Im dead in the water.
