Different 後面的介詞到底是 from, to 還是 than? ——用數據說話

相信很多人和我一樣，在中學英語課上學過 different from 這個固定搭配，比如以下兩個我在當代美國英語語料庫里找到的句子：

She is different from anyone Ive dated in the past.

How is your perspective different from the traditional view?

然而在日常口語，甚至一些書面用語中，大家可否留心，很多英美人士會也說 different to 或者 different than，比如：

The character of jobs is very different to what it was 40 or 50 years ago.

This is totally different to a general election.

Windows 10 looks very different than when it was first announced.

The economic climate is starkly different than in 2003.

關於這個問題，劍橋在線詞典的一篇文章的解釋可供參考，感興趣的讀者可以去讀原文。Different from, different to or different than ? - English Grammar Today - Cambridge Dictionary 首先，無論是different from, different to 還是 different than，他們在表意上並無區別。其次，無論是在英式英語還是美式英語里，different from 都是目前為止最常見的用法， different to 和 different than 更多地被用在口語中。

需要注意的是，這篇文章指出，美式英語中 different than 的用法多一些，而英式英語中 different to 更流行。為了驗證這個說法，我分別在當代美國英語語料庫（以下簡稱 COCA ）和英國國家語料庫（以下簡稱 BNC ）搜索 different from, different to 以及 different than，結果如下：

很明顯，different from 在這兩種英語里都是最常用的。在different than 和 different to 這兩種搭配方面，美國人傾向於用 different than，而英國人更喜歡用 different to。

以上是兩個語料庫中所有的搜索結果。然而，當我單獨搜索口語語料時，有趣的結果出現了。

在美式英語口語中， different from 和 different than 出現次數已經不相上下。而在英式英語口語中，different to 出現的次數也只是稍遜 different from 。不過，需要說明的是，我在這兩個語料庫搜索 different to 時，搜到結果里就包含這樣的句子：

Obviously it looked different to different people.

Each teacher brings something different to each station.

She had something different to live for.

這些句子種雖然含有 different to, 但是所表的並不是前後兩者之間的比較，我們不能把這些句子中的 to 替換成 from。因此我認為，在英式英語口語中，different from 還是要比 different to 更普遍。不過，關於 different to 我在英國時也有親身體會。我注意到許多英國老師的 PPT 里都會出現 different to 的用法，可見口語中 different to 已經很強勢，並越來越滲透到書面語中。

一些在語法上比較保守的人士，至今依然宣稱 different from 才是正確的用法，different to 和 different than 都是錯的。尤其 different than 更是錯得離譜，因為通常 than 是和形容詞比較級連用的，比如： Tom is taller than John. 如果 Tom is tall than John 是錯的, 那麼 Tom is different than John. 也是錯的。

這種保守的語法觀，我自己是不接受的。我相信，在語法的問題上，The majority wins ! 如果很多人這樣說，那麼這種說法就是可接受的。不過我也在思考為什麼很多人說 different than，又全然不覺得彆扭。我們在使用形容詞比較級+ than（ taller than, better than, more beautiful than 等等）時一定會涉兩個事物之間的比較。雖然 different 在形容詞構詞形式上不是比較級，但是當我們用 different than 時，就一定會涉及到兩個事物之間的比較。也就是說 different than 構成了事實上的比較。因此，人們把 than 這個介詞用在 different 後面也有其合理性。

在實際的語言應用中，我建議大家還是盡量使用 different from。different from 是最無爭議，也是書面語中最被廣泛接受的用法，至少目前尚且如此。同時，當我們聽到或者讀到 different to 和 different than 時，也不要認為這些用法就是錯的，因為這兩種用法在口語中也相當普遍了，而且我猜他們也會越來越多出現在書面語上。

如果我們承認三種用法都可以接受，那麼這就給一些語法測試帶來尷尬。我只希望高考英語，SAT英語，GMAT 或者類似考試中的語法測試部分不要出現這種有爭議的題目。當然，如果這種題目真的出現，我想最佳選項肯定是 different from。
