Coming This Week: My First LIVE!
Ni men hao, everyone! I』m very excited, because my first Zhihu LIVE is nearly here: on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m., I』ll try to help as many of you as I can, with a topic that I know can be a real challenge: Talking to Foreigners: How to Turn Yourself into a More Comfortable, More Confident Conversationalist.
Indeed, I』ll share a handful of my core Communication strategies and skills, to 「demystify」 the entire process. I』ll show that you don』t need to first become 「great friends」 with a foreigner to have a deep, meaningful conversation. Nor do you need to speak excellent English, or be very outgoing, or even be so confident. What you need, instead, are: sincerity, curiosity, empathy – and the courage to try!
I explained part of this in my Jan. 9th column. In this LIVE, I』ll answer any questions you have, like:
*How can I approach a foreigner, to strike up a meaningful conversation?
*How can I earn their trust, to persuade them to open up, and share their thoughts and feelings?
*How can I improve - then express – my curiosity, sincerity and empathy?
*How can I judge if a foreigner is sincerely curious to learn about China – and the Chinese people?
*How can I share some personal insights about China, and the Chinese people, with a foreigner?
Meanwhile, as I prepare for Thursday』s event, I』m happy to be juggling several other projects:
*On Jan. 20th, I was a studio-guest of the CCTV-CGTN program, 「Asia Today」 – to discuss President Trump, as well as his Foreign and Defense policies. (I appear 11:25 into the show, and again at 20:30.)
*This week, I』ll also kick off a meaningful Communications Consultancy for the Global Food Safety Center, training their Communications staff in how to produce effective advocacy through storytelling.
*Next week, I』ll return to Beijing Foreign Studies University, and its unique Master』s in Multimedia Journalism program, to lead a one-day workshop in International Journalism and writing structure.
*Next month, I return to Renmin University – and its graduate program in International Journalism and Communications – to teach one course in Feature Writing, and a second in English Speech & Writing.
