Designers and models will converge on the capital, Riyadh, today for the beginning of Arab Fashion Week, which the conservative kingdom is hosting for the first time.
This is in keeping with efforts by Muhammad bin Salman, the young crown prince, to loosen things up. Prince Muhammad has curbed the religious police, who enforced a puritanical brand of Islam, and given more freedom to women, who will be allowed to drive starting in June. Last week he toned down the kingdom』s dress code, which required women to wear black abayas (long robes).
From now on the decision will be left 「entirely」 to women 「to decide what type of decent and respectful attire」 they choose to wear, said the crown prince, who is in America trying to attract foreign investment. Such reforms should help. They will also make Arab Fashion Week a more colourful affair.
