【SAT寫作批改】《Let There Be Dark》
The darkness in the night is progressively diminishing in America. Paul Bogard, in his article, "Let There Be Dark", presents the significance and the severve situation of the darkness in the night and states the devastating consequence caused by the light pollution in order to appeal people to rise the awareness of darkness and protect the darkness from light pollution. To help illustrate his own statements, Paul takes advantage of statistics, examples, simile and rehorical questions. The audiences of this passage is all the American people.
In the opening paragraph, Paul successfully uses anecdote. He narrates his own experience at his familys cabin on a Minnesota lake where he undergoes a ideal time darkness and appreciate the beauty of the darkness so that he could highlight the increasingly diminshing of the darkness. On using this anecdote, the writer vividly and vigorously expresses his appreciation and love to the darkness and makes an emotional tone and atmosphere as well. With the help of this anecdote, author also arouses readers interests to the article and increase readers engagement. Whats more, this anecdote allow the writer to make a connection with readers and to make readers rise a feeling of resonance.
In the fourth paragraph, the author skillfully uses examples, He states that the light pollution is extremely detrimental to the darkness without which the worlds ecological system would be davastated, with the migration of "400 species of birds" takes place at night and the some kinds of moths that become active at night are in responsibilities to "pollinate 80% of the worlds flora". With the help of these examples, the writer expresses the severity of the light pollution and the indispensable functions of the darkness. On reading these examples, readers would draw their attention on the issues that are mentioned above and rise the desirability to prevent the darkness from being destroyed.
In the fourth paragraph, the writer uses simile. He skillfully compares the light pollution to the bulldozer that destroys the night. Bulldozer is a machine that can cause tremendous devastation. In this scene, the impact to the night caused by the light pollution just like damage caused by bulldozer; therefore, though this simile, author totally expresses the damage to the night caused by light pollution is really severve. In addition, the writer uses rhetorical question in the fifth paragragh. He rises the question that would Van Gogh painted "Starry Night" if the world was filled with electric light. With the help of this, author strengthens the tone of the article and invokes readers reflection on the significance of darkness that is refer artistic realm.
With the usage of examples, statistics, simile as well as rhetorical question, the writer successfully convince the readers that we should aware the vitality and irreplaceability of the darkness and protect our diminishing darkness against the light pollution and the overuse of electric light.
