美國職場分析、討論、開會、presentation常用俚語/短語 (Drama is my middle name!)
首先介紹一下本人背景,Emory MBA畢業後在美國工作了兩年,一直在銀行業的business team從事analysis heavy的工作。發現美國的職場精英們特別喜歡用各種各樣的俚語,使得語言表達生動有趣、充滿智慧、還可以化解和同事撕逼時的緊張氣氛。Data person 還可以以此掩蓋自己是個nerd的事實。就此總結一下我一起工作過的美國同事們(和我)最喜歡用的一些俚語和常見的應用場景。因為本人是analyst背景,所以以下俚語也特別適用於強分析的工作,和一堆data scientist一起開會的時候也就靠這些短語調節調節氣氛。以下排名略分先後,歡迎大家增添你工作中常聽到的俚語。
1. Play devil』s advocate
例句:Just to play devils advocate here, I think there are some downsides of this recommendation.
當你想反駁別人的意見但又想假裝很友好。
2.On the grand scheme of things
例句: On the grand scheme of things, this solution improves the profit by conducting price discrimination.
表達你抓重點抓本質,有big picture,看問題不陷入細節。
3. With a grain of salt
例句:The data is a bit old so we should look at this insight with a grain of salt.
當你不太相信別人的結論因為對其背後所列的數據有質疑。
4. low hanging fruit, fruit on the ground
例句:This is not even low hanging fruits, it is fruits on the ground, all we need to do is pick it up.
為自己的project爭取資源,要求大家prioritize。
5. push the envelop
例句:To push the envelop, can we do another layer of segmentation analysis here?
對別人工作不滿意,想讓別人再多做一些
6. rabbit hole
例句:This is a rabbit hole that is not worth chasing after.
對分析的方向不太滿意,覺得這個分析這樣做下去是個無效的無底洞
7. Fry the big fish
例句:We should not spend much time on this project, we have bigger fish to fry.
表示我們要抓大魚,別浪費時間在效益低的小蝦米項目上
8. In the driver』s seat
例句:You are in the drivers seat, you need to drive this project forward.
表示全權放權給小弟
9. In a nutshell
例句: In a nutshell, It is an experiment to test the price sensitivity.
表達你只抓本質,不說廢話
10. In the ballpark
例句:What is our revenue growth rate in the past three years, 15%? Is it in the ballpark?
表達你不陷入到細節,分析快速果斷
11. On my radar
例句:Dont worry boss, it is already on my radar.
表達一件事情已在你計劃之內
12. Move the needle
例句:It is a good idea but I am not sure it is enough to move the needle.
表示你看問題注重實效,別人做的東西都沒啥用。
13. Hands are tied
例句:Sorry that I have to let you go. I actually like your work but you know my hands are tied。
炒人推卸責任專用
14. Off the top of my head
例句:I cant think of any solution off the top of my head。
表示自己暫時毫無辦法, 但給點時間還是有希望
15. Needle in the hay
例句:Trying to find those customers on the internet is like finding the needle in the hay.
表示對方的營銷方案不夠精準。
16. Take that offline
例句:I can reconcile with you later. Lets take that offline.
大team開會的時候有人找你茬,讓他下會單獨討論。
17. Thumps up/thumps down
例句:Should we go with this recommendation? Thumps up or thumps down?
大佬范。
18. Re-invent the wheel

找別人要現成code必備。
19. Jump thru the hoops
例句:I dont want to make this process too complex by adding another hoop for the customer to jump thru to get the reward.
用戶體驗,Less is more!
20. Apples to apples comparison
例句:Your conclusion is biased because the market has changed and it is not apples to apples comparison anymore.
分析的時候最好是能夠保證其他因素穩定。
21. leave money on the table
例句:We should expand to this segment as soon as possible otherwise we are leaving the money on the table.
強調現成的機會。
22. At the end of day
例句:At the end of day, it is profit that we seek.
展現自己result-oriented。
23. Have the skin in the game
例句:I dont like to hire a contractor, they dont have the skin in the game.
表示有利益相關更容易motivated。
24. Bread and butter
例句:Credit card business is the bread and butter of the banks.
主要的收入/利潤來源。
25. Double down
例句:Given the data we have seen, we should double down on this channel.
表示你做決定果斷。
26. Ahead of the curve
例句:We need to introduce this technology to make sure we are ahead of the curve.
保持競爭優勢。
27. Groundbreaking
例句:This is truly groundbreaking technology.
前沿技術。
28. On my plate/bandwidth
例句:I have too much on my plate now and dont have the bandwidth to get this done in this week.
美國人不喜歡浪費,盤子上有多少吃多少。
29. Put something on my belt
例句:My new boss wants to put something on his belt so he is pushing the team hard to get this done this month.
獲得一些軍功章。
30. Applaud the work.
例句:I want to applaud this effort.
老闆鼓勵小弟專用。
31. Call it a day.
例句:Lets call it a day.
今天到此為止。(燒了一天腦,回家洗了睡)
32. Pull the trigger
例句:Lets pull the trigger on this.
結束分析,開始行動。
33. Go thru the roof
例句:Our cost went thru the roof last week.
表示一個指標上升很快。
34. False alarm
例句:I think you made a mistake here, em.. Sorry, that was the false alarm.
剛剛我在胡說八道。

例句:I am just thinking out loud here.

推動項目的發展。
37. On the same page.
例句:Just want to make sure we are on the same page, what this table mean?
要問個很蠢得問題,請你別介意。
38. Bullish
例句:I am very bullish on this plan since we have done the test.
有信心。
39. Dont count the chickens before they hatch.
例句:I want to play down the expectation when setting the forecast, lets not count the chickens before they hatch.
預測的時候低調一點。
40 Bring someone up to speed.
例句:I will need to bring the new hires up to speed.
幫助新人上手。
41. Bottom line
例句:This would have impact on the bottom line.
表示你result-oriented. Bottom line一般指利潤,是Income Statement的最後一行。
42. Close the loop.
例句:Before we move on, let』s close the loop on this topic.
表示你一個個解決問題,邏輯清楚,有條不紊。
43. Spoon feed.
例句:You have done a good job spoon feeding me the analysis and insights.
老闆都很忙,沒空去花時間了解你的project的所有的背景,當你做presentation,去get buy-in的時候需要一口口的喂懂他/她。
