"The gaps between English and Chinese in terms of language, culture, and teaching methodology are large."
Some people think goverments should spend money on saving languages with fewer speakers from dying out completely. Others think this is a waste of financial resources. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Opinions vary on the extent to which nations should allocate public funds to preserve minority languages. In my view, this objective merits funding only in certain circumstances.
1. Minority languages have a historical and cultural significance to the people of the entire nation which is out of proportion to the low numbers of speakers.
2. Loss of Knowledge: Anthropologists, sociologists, and linguists still do not understand language. When languages die, they lose access to research material for all time.
3. Loss of Variety: Not only do we lose data when a language disappears; we also lose cultural variety. Diversity is modern civilizations fuel for innovation, and language is a part of that legacy.
1. There is little point striving to keep a fading language alive if the younger generation cannot be bothered to speak it.
Governments have many competing priorities for public funding, such as education and health, and need to account to taxpayers for how public money is allocated.
2. Whether or not anyone agrees with the principle of letting languages die, it is inevitable. It has been happening for as long as language has existed and is a natural evolution of culture.
I believe that public funds to prevent the extinction of minority languages should be awarded only if two main conditions are satisfied. The first is that there should be an active desire among the remaining speakers of the language for their tongue to be preserved. Secondly, this desire should be backed up with specific plans for activities and facilities which secure their intended aim.
