"The gaps between English and Chinese in terms of language, culture, and teaching methodology are large."

Some people think that the purpose of education is to prepare individuals to be useful to society whereas, for others, the purpose is to help them achieve their personal ambitions. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Useful to society

1. The provision of education is widely considered to be one of the most important functions of society. Huge amounts of resources are ploughed into the provision of education. Society has the right to dictate, to a certain extent, the aims of the education it provides, and naturally, preparing students to contribute to society itself is a normal aim.

2. In any given activity, there can be tension between individual happiness and social utility but not necessarily. The ability to be useful to society is recognised by most people as one of the cornerstones of individual happiness. As the provision of education is inevitably a social activity, logically the fruits of this activity will tend to manifest themselves in the social sphere, and not just the private.

Personal ambitions

Young people need to find themselves – to discover who they are and what they are good at. It is not inherently selfish for them to see their education primarily as a means for personal advancement. Those students who anxiously seek to satisfy the expectations of society often do so prematurely; in so doing, they run the risk that their lack of personal vision will result in choosing the wrong studies or career path, or perhaps not excelling in the career path they have chosen.

Personal opinion

I have known a number of young people who were forced by their families into studying degree subjects that they did not enjoy and which did not inspire them; this led to a great deal of unhappiness and resentment. No doubt their parents believed that they were doing their children a favour by pushing them down career paths which were more profitable and socially useful, such as law and business. However ultimately, many students will only be able to make a positive contribution to society once they are free to choose studies that suit and inspire them.

1) plough resources (into) (向……)

A. People plough back resources to benefit a community.B. The NYT has the resources to plough into developing the right payment model and software.

2) excell

To show superiority

A. surpass othersB. excels at tennisC. excel in mathD. Few dancers have excelled her in virtuosity.E. She excelled at outdoor sports.
