收汝淚縱橫。

眼枯即見骨，

況乃王師順，

a. Besides, they were part of the imperial army in a righteous war.

撫養甚分明。

送行勿泣血，

a. Therefore they should not cry in bidding farewell.

b. Don』t weep blood as we see you on your way—

僕射如父兄。

a. Captain was kind like their father or big brother.

白話譯文

我在去新安的路上走過，

聽到人聲喧嘩，原來是吏役在村裡點名徵兵。

我便問那些新安縣裡派來的吏役：

「新安這個小縣，連年戰爭，還會有成丁的青年可以入伍嗎？」（又一說為：難道新安這個縣小到沒有成丁的人了嗎？）

官吏回答說：「昨夜已有兵府文書下達，

規定點選十八歲的中男入伍了。」

我說：「啊，這些人還是年齡不大的青年，

怎麼能讓他們去守衛東都啊？」

肥胖的青年大概家境還不壞，他們都有母親來送行。

瘦弱的青年大多來自貧戶，他們都孤零零的，無人陪送。

時候已到黃昏，河水東流而去，

青山下還有送行者的哭聲。

我看到如此景象，覺得只好對那些哭泣的人安慰一番，說：「把你們的眼淚收起吧，

不要哭壞了眼睛，徒然傷了身體。

天地終是一個無情的東西啊！

官軍進攻相州，本來希望一二天之內就能平定，

豈知把敵人的形勢估計錯了，以致打了敗仗，

兵士一營一營地潰散了。

伙食就在舊營壘附近供應，

訓練也在東都近郊。

要他們做的工作是掘城壕，也不會深到見水。

牧馬也是比較輕的任務。

況且這一場戰爭是名正言順的正義戰爭，參加的是討伐叛徒的王師。

主將對於兵士，顯然是很關心撫養的。

你們送行的家屬不用哭得很傷心，

僕射對兵士仁愛得像父兄一樣。
